Southpaw is a film that I have had a ton of excitement about since Kurt Sutter first announced it was something he had been writing. I have followed this movie quite closely since its inception and I am going to talk a little about that then give my trailer review. Here we go!
Southpaw was originally written and conceived by Kurt Sutter very closely as a sort of very loose sequel story to 8 mile with Eminem AKA Slim Shady AKA Marshall Mathers. The film wasn't meant to be a direct follow-up but more of the things Marshall had dealt with in his personal life after 8 Mile. Even the title Southpaw was decided upon because Eminem writes with his left hand and left handed boxers while very few tend to be very deadly, just like Slim is lethal with the lyrics he writes with his left hand.
The script steadily evolved to have much more dramatic consequences such as the wife getting killed and the kid being taken away. But these event still mirrored Marshall's real life fears of the worst possible outcomes to certain situations.
Really think about it...
Eminem often raps about getting into fights with and killing his Ex-Wife Kim Mathers and the fear of those fights ending in her real life death probably truly affected Marshall's mental state.
But that isn't all I got. Here's more...
Marshall has always talked about how strongly he loves his daughter Hailie Jade Mathers, and I believe that the inclusion of the characters daughter being taken away due to his violent antics and drug use is directly related to Eminems fear of that happening to him and having his daughter hate him for what he had done wrong. Marshall overdosed back in 2007 and was taken to the hospital which is described in detail in much of his "Relapse" album, and after something like that I would be fearing the state wanting to take my daughter away from me.
So now let's show the trailer and talk about the finished product! But first I would like to thank Kurt Sutter and his AMAZINGwriting and his eye for great storytelling and events to base things on. Marshall's life is very interesting and ripe with stories that could be explored on film.
Here is the trailer
Okay now that looks AMAZING if I might say so myself. Even though I would've loved to see Eminem in this I am excited he decided not to star in it for two reasons, the first being that it would've pulled away from the great music he has been releasing for the past couple years, and the second reason being that even without his presence we have a great actor in Jake Gyllenhaal looking to give the performance of his career. Marshall's fingerprints are still all over the movie too, from the New Eminem song in the trailer, to Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson being a main star, to the main characters choice of outfits. This is going to be a phenomenal movie that has very inspired writing and a cast that is to die for. Dare I say WATCH OUT OSCARS?!!?!?!? I HOPE SO!
UPDATE!: I didn't even mention the fact that the film is being directed by Antoine Fuqua who has made such great movies as Training Day and The Equalizer.
