To many, comic books are absurd, pointless, unsophisticated etc. But to me and to anyone reading this they're the exact opposite. In school I have teachers who criticize comic books because they aren't "sophisticated novels". But to us who actually read them we know they are so much more. Comics are a release from the real world, a way to travel to a place where anything can happen. And while comics aren't Shakespeare, they do something most books can't. With comic books you get to know the characters, you create a connection with them. You journey with them on their lives and adventures, feel their pain and their happiness. And comic books are sophisticated, anyone who actually sits and reads them can see the genius and skill that goes behind them. But back to the connection with the characters. For the life of me I can't remember anything i learned in math last year, but on the top of my head right now I can remember over 30 Batman villains, or i can right now go through superhero after superhero, reciting their real names and their powers and probably their back story. Out of all these thousands of characters, there are five that I really love, well here they are:
Wolverine, AKA: James Logan Howlett. On the outside he's an unstoppable killing machine, but his internal problems are so much more complex. This is one reason i love Wolverine. It's impossible to even imagine what he's been through and the pain he's endured, every time someone gets close to him they get killed or he eventually outlives them. Because of this he is such a complex character, always having internal conflicts affecting him in some way. Also he's trained in Japan, he's a ninja, a true warrior. Another thing that makes him unique is his willingness to kill. Many superheroes have a strict no killing policy but not him, he does what needs to be done. And more than that he's the best at what he does, and what he does isn't pretty. I'm in the middle of the Death of Wolverine story line and i gained so much respect for Wolverine because even with his lack of powers, he still fights against Sabretooth because he needs to stop him at all costs, even his life. Wolverine is a man who has literally been to hell and back, and because of this he's my number 5 favorite.
4. The Flash (Barry Allen)
I first started reading comic books when i was 10 years old, i remember the first comic I read was a Flash comic all about the Barry Allen's secrets. Of course I had no idea what I was reading but I still thought it was so cool. Over the past 6 six years I've read ALOT more and I know a lot more. I know Jay Garrick was the real original but I see Barry as the original because he is the Flash that created a legacy, unlocked the speed force and really did amazing things. The flash is not super strong, he cant fly, cant shoot anything, no magic powers, but he can run. He's the one superhero with powers that has only one power, but that one power is incredible. He can run faster than the speed of light, read whole books in seconds and become an expert in the subject, he can beat superman in a race, he can create tornadoes, vibrate through walls and travel through time. People always say Superman is over rated and his powers are inconsistent and he should be able to stop any villain immediately but i think flash is under rated and that he is the one who can stop any villain. The time travel is the most amazing thing to me. His access to the speed force can allow him to go anywhere in time, but he has to have the self control to not change anything because he knows of the possible repercussions. Also the flash is one of the only heroes with a legacy, a family.
The flash has managed to create a legacy that is still around in the 30th century. His family of speedsters have all managed to save the world time and time again, and none of it would have been possible if it weren't for Barry. My last point about him is Flashpoint. 1. he had to face the fact that with all his power he couldn't save his mother. and 2. it showed that he has the power to literally completely change the world. Also he kinda started New 52, so yea he's pretty awesome. This is why he's my fourth favorite.
He's Batman, everyone knows him and his story. And i know many people probably chose him as their favorite and there's a reason for it: he's just awesome. He's dark and brooding and a master of detective work and martial arts. He has no powers but he never lets that get in his way. He's willing to fight any villain, no matter how strong or powerful he always is willing to fight, and his genius and skill gives him the ability to win.
Also Batman has his villains, his amazing, amazing villains. Batman is who he is because of them and vice versa. Batman's refusal to kill them (especially Joker) despite all the evil they do and people they kill shows his amazing self control and self discipline. And like the flash he too has a legacy, not in his own children but in proteges and reputation (The story of the Batman will live on forever). But the difference between him and the flash is loss. Flash has not lost like batman has. Batman lost both his parents, f, he lost Jason to the Joker, and worst of all he lost his son, his only descendant. Batmans genius, skill, self control, psyche and everything else about him are what make him my 3rd favorite.
Oh Deadpool... how do I even begin? He's the merc with a mouth, the worlds greatest assasin, and probably the funniest comic book character ever. He breaks the fourth wall, talks to himself, he even has had a "lost" infinity stone to change continuity. Oh yea, he also killed the whole marvel universe. Besides being completely insane, he is really a complex character. It's impossible to imagine the pain he went through in the weapon x program to become how he is, cause whatever it was it made him crazy. Also he had to live in Canada! how bad is that?!? Although he seems like an evil anti-hero, he has a big heart and a strange set of morals.
My deapool paragraph is short cause he's just extraordinary, i dont know how to fully express his awesomeness
and now last but not least
1. John Constantine
No, I'm not talking about Keanu Reaves. No not the tv show (although its great) it doesn't do Constantine justice, and no not even New 52 Constantine, I'm talking about good o'l Vertigo Constantine. I only started reading his comics last summer, but i fell in love very quickly. By far he's definitely in the top 5 darkest characters, and in my opinion he's the most complex. He's a man who is constantly surrounded by the death of loved ones and friends. And the weirdest thing is: it doesn't seem to phase him. He's a hero, he fights against evil, but what draws me to him most is how horrible a person he is. The big superheroes of DC are all big, muscular heroic good genuine people. But Constantine is the exact opposite. He's a con man, a thief, a liar, a cheat. He's selfish and only cares about how to save himself (and chas). His relationship with Chas is also amazing. Chas is the one person Constantine really cares about, because Chas is his "mate" . I also love him because he's a genius. He tricks demons like its nothing, he always find a genius way to stop them. It's his genius and power and selfishness that gives him a reputation. That's another reason I love him. He's by no means an all powerful magician. He has extreme knowledge in magic, and can perform ceremonies and summon/stop demons but he's not at the same power level as lets say Doctor Strange. But magicians and demons alike are terrified just by hearing his name. I cant find a picture but there's a scene in "the book of magic" where constantine walks into a club with the worlds most powerful magicians, and when they tell him to leave he says something along the lines of "I'm john Constantine, you know who I am, now do you really want to try and kick me out?" and the fear on the faces of the magicians gave me goosebumps. John Constantines dark persona, his selfishness, lack of care for the life of others but himself, his relationship with Chas, his ability to stop even the worst of demons and his ability to stop any magician or demon cold with just his name are the reasons why he is my favorite comic book character.
Thanks for reading!
