Aragorn's sword Anduril (It's name used to be Narsil) is one of the greatest fantasy swords ever created. Not only because of it's incredible history, but it's also one of the most practical fantasy swords ever designed. There's actually nothing about it that would keep you from picking it up and defending yourself with it.
However, fans of The Lord of the Rings have made a lot of mistakes when talking about this beautiful blade. First, it is NOT a Broadsword. The term broadsword should only be used for the Scottish basket hilt sword pictured below.
Another mistake that I've seen people make is when they call it a Greatsword. Greatswords were around 4 feet 5 inches or larger. Anduril is around 3 feet 5 inches.
No, Aragorn's sword is one of the greatest swords ever created. It has been shown in many movies. Anduril is (drum roll...) a LONGSWORD!
The longsword was used through 1300-1600's. The Longsword is also a favorite of the HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) community. Other names for the longsword include Bastard Sword, and Hand and a half sword.
