Where do you put all of Gotham's most mentally unhinged, twisted, diabolical criminals? This isn't the opening to a really bad joke, I'm actually asking you.
The answer is Arkham Asylum.
Arkham Asylum houses some of Batman's, and the Greater DC Universe's, most infamous criminals: Poison Ivy, Clayface, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Bane, Victor Zsasz and many, many more, including the Clown Prince of Crime himself, The Joker.
Arkham has a set place in DC lore, and has become an integral element in any Batman story. So it is no surprise that we can expect to see the High Security Facility appearing somewhere in the DC Cinematic Universe.
David Ayer, director of DC's upcoming villain ensemble film [Suicide Squad](movie:2283363), has tweeted a teaser of Arham Asylum from the set of the film:
It's not much, I'll admit, however, what Ayer says is correct: "Every detail matters". So even seeing something as small as this gives us something tangible from that world, and means we can get a little bit more excited. You can tell that care and detail has gone into these ring binders, even though they will probably act as background props. This tells me that Ayer cares about his film and it gives me hope that this level of detail will bleed into every aspect of the film.
Also, can I just say that I am really fond of the Arkham logo? It's simple, yet just perfect. There's always a risk of things like this going overboard but this is perfectly representative of the Asylum!
Arkham Asylum has played its role in many forms of the DC Universe. From Comic Book, to Rocksteady's Batman Arkham Video Games, to Fox's [Gotham](series:1127075) and even having a small appearance in Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy.
Now all I am waiting for is a glimpse of the exterior. Will Ayer stick to the tradition of having Arkham Asylum on its very own island? Or will he diverge from the source material like Nolan did and place it in a more suburban location? Personally, I am hoping for island!
Another question I have is how Arkham is going to fit into the film itself? Will we witness Amanda Waller actually entering the Asylum and recruiting her team? Will Task Force X already be established except one member whom we will meet at Arkham? If that was the case then this would be a good chance for us to be introduced to the team alongside the character. Or will Arkham Asylum house The Joker, a character whom many suspect will be the antagonist of the Suicide Squad film?
Whatever the case, I am looking forward to getting a look into Arkham. I am hoping for more than a glimpse: I want to see some of the sadistic criminals lurking around, and I want to really experience that gritty atmosphere we all expect when we think of Arkham Asylum.
What do you think? Would you like another suburban setting for Arkham Asylum or would you like it to be situated on Arkham Island? How would you like to see Arkham introduced into the film? And what would you like to see from a cinematic Arkham Asylum? Let me know in the comments below.
