The world of the CW's The Flash is a very confusing one considering all the secrets and plot twists. However, episode 15 titled "Out Of Time" and episode 17 "Tricksters" revealed many key plot points in the Reverse Flash's history, and I am here to set out a theory that may actually be true.
The theories revolving around Dr. Harrison Wells are enormous, but we finally figured out (well semi-figured out) his true intentions the night Nora Allen was murdered. As he revealed to Cisco, Wells was originally going to murder young Barry Allen. He never fully revealed why, but one can assume he wanted to murder Barry because of Eobard Thawne's hatred toward [The Flash](series:1068303) (as it is in the comic books). Also revealed on the episode was Wells' real name, Eobard Thawne (which pretty much every comic book reader guessed by the first episode) who is a decedent of Eddie Thawne. When episode 17 came around, Well's backstory was revealed
*ATTENTION TO THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN THE EPISODE*
Harrison Wells is not Eobard Thawne, Harrison was a regular man with a regular life. Though one night him and his wife were driving home when Eobard Thawne sabotaged their car resulting in a car crash. Well's wife died, but Wells eventually crawled out of the car and asked Eobard for help. Eobard had then used some future gizmo that made Eobard look exactly like Wells, and possible have his memories. This also resulted in the real Harrison Wells death.
SO WHY DIDN'T THAWNE JUST GO BACK TO HIS TIMELINE?
When Cisco and Joe found out that there were two speedsters, count em' two speedsters (Spongebob Reference), the night of Nora's murder. Episode 17 opened with a slow motion fight between Flash and Reverse Flash from that very night, and when Flash mysteriously disappeared, Thawne wasn't able to travel foward in time. So what was stopping Thawne from breaking the timeline again.
In comes, THE SPEED FORCE
So here is where my theory comes into play. When this event happened in the comic books, The Flash, after Nora's murder, was absorbed into the Speed Force. For those of you who have absolutely no idea what I am talking about, I'll explain. The Speed Force is what gives every speedster their powers, and the faster a speedster can go, the bigger the Speed Force gets (across time and space). Even in episode 17, Wells tells Barry to feel the Speed Force around him. So, when future Barry was absorbed into the Speed Force, it became smaller and this meant that time travel was not possible. This is why Wells said he was "stuck" in this timeline for 15 years. Barry didn't have his powers until he got struck by lightning. This also explains why Thawne/Wells has been training Barry to run faster, and why he says the Flash's speed is his key to return home. He wants the Speed Force to get bigger so he can either
- Travel back and kill young Barry
- Travel forward in time because whatever reason he has.
Somewhere in the near Flash future, Barry will be absorbed through the Speed Force (And NO, this doesn't mean Barry will die, he will return in a later season). Wally West will be introduced to the show and become the new Flash for season 3 or 4.
