It seems like it wasn't too long ago in the history of the Mission Impossible franchise that the IMF team was going rogue - or rather they were enacting the "Ghost Protocol" which seemed a lot like the same thing. This time, it looks like there's another team, The Syndicate, who are going rogue and trying to take out the IMF team. Let's breakdown the new trailer.
Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation Trailer
The first full Mission Impossible 5 trailer lays out some of the details and features some exciting glimpses at some of the highly anticipated major stunt sequences that take place in Morocco, the Vienna State Opera and, most spectacularly, with Tom Cruise attached to the side of an Airbus during take-off.
The Anti-IMF Syndicate
Fans of The Royal Tenenbaums know that there is no better voice to introduce a movie than the soothing purr of Alec Baldwin. The trailer starts off with his CIA big wig informing Jeremy Renner of the intentions to dismantle the IMF - and it looks like they're planning on using a little something ominously called The Syndicate to do this with extreme prejudice.
British actor Sean Harris is playing the leader of this "anti-IMF" team but not too much else is known about what Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt, Simon Pegg's Benji, and pork-pie hat afficianado Ving Rhames' Luther are up to in this sequel. What's clear is that they are getting some new help from Rebecca Ferguson - who may actually be tied into the "Rabbit Foot" storyline from JJ Abram's third Mission Impossible movie.
The Deadly Legs of Rebecca Ferguson
Rebecca Ferguson's character also seems to have a very entertaining habit of snapping people's necks with her legs. A killer move, to be sure. It looks like Simon Pegg's Benji and Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt may be spending a good portion of the movie teamed up with each other while Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames make up the second unit team of Mission Impossible 5.
I'm very interested in what kind of plan Cruise and Pegg are cooking up with Ferguson in this scene.
Tom Cruise Takes A Dive
If I'm not mistaken it has to do with this crazy machine made waterfall that Tom Cruise is seen jumping in to. In a series that is known for its bonkers missions, whatever they're planning on accomplishing by jumping into the vortex of water may even top the Airbus sequence in the crazy department.
Taking the New BMW For a Spin
More recognizable are the narrow streets of Morocco which is where it appears The Syndicate has tracked down the IMF team and Ethan and Benji are making their escape in a car chase that sees the old handbrake maneuver being used to wipe out multiple motorcycles at once and eventually ends with the guys making a flying backwards escape in their car.
IMF's Night at the Opera
One of the big set pieces is what looks to be an epic fight inside and outside of the Vienna State Opera. There are jump kicks up in the scaffolding, knife-fights, glamorous neck-breaking and a dramatic exit in the form of a jump down the side of the historic landmark building.
Mission Impossible 5 Takes Flight
But what is shaping up to be the most memorable scene in Mission Impossible 5 is seeing Tom Cruise running along the wing of a massive Airbus A400M Atlas and grabbing on to its door as the humungous plane is taking off into the air. Hardly any context is needed to make this an impressive stunt as Tom Cruise is again clearly not using a stunt double as this 50 year old actor is fighting against wind and gravity while strapped to the airplane.
What do you think? Will [Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation](movie:373501) be able to top the Dubai sequence of Mission Impossible 4? Is Tom Cruise getting too old for these shenanigans?
