It seems today that all we see is violence in movies and sex on TV... but how much actual REAL unsimulated sex scenes in movies do we see in theaters? Sex sells but has always made Hollywood a little uncomfortable - especially when the actors involved are not actually... acting (aka a sex film?).

Check out some of the movies which achieved cinematic release despite featuring unsimulated, genuine sex acts on camera! Let us know what you think about these real sex scenes in movies below.

Movie: Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song

  • Year of Release: 1971
  • Sex Act: missionary penetration

Most people have seen Shaft or at least heard Curtis Mayfield's stunning soundtrack for Supafly, but Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song is the Blaxploitation movie that broke ground for its scenes of unsimulated sex from controversial director Melvin Van Peebles.

Movie: Pink Flamingos

  • Year of Release: 1972
  • Sex Act: Fellatio

Banned in almost every state director John Waters tried to show it in, Pink Flamingos - featuring a drag queen blowing her on-screen 'son' and eating a freshly laid dog turd - is now considered a cult classic.

Movie: Caligula

  • Year of Release: 1979
  • Sex Act: Group sex, including penetration, fellatio and ejaculation

Caligula, based on the real life exploits of the titular notoriously insane and lustful Roman Emperor, really gets into the orgiastic action - starring actors that seem rather unlikely now - Malcolm McDowell and Dame Helen Mirren!

Movie: Romance

  • Year of Release: 1999
  • Sex Act: Penetration, fellatio 'Romance' & 'Baise-moi'

Francophone wildchild Catherine Breillat makes movies that are exquisitely difficult to watch, full of violent sex and sexy violence, though don't expect gore and explosions - she's the harsh mistress of drawn-out cruelty...

Movie: Baise-moi

  • Year of Release: 2000
  • Sex Act: heterosexual penetration, including a pretty vile rape scene

A movie with a title that translates as 'F*** Me' was never gonna be a rose garden, but this lo-fi sex shocker is fairly grim viewing. Somewhere between arthouse fare and sexploitation schlock, audiences will continue to be divided by its dubious charms.

Section 3: Art Films

Movie: The Brown Bunny

  • Year of Release: 2003
  • Sex Act: fellatio

Indie darling and fashion icon Chloe Sevigny gives director Vincent Gallo an impromptu and totally unsimulated blowjob in a random scene that makes the rest of this torturous artsy-fartsy slog worth sitting through if the oral stimulation of a penis is your cup of tea.

Movie: 9 Songs

  • Year of Release: 2006
  • Sex Act: penetration of a few kinds

Critically panned, Michael Winterbottom's 9 Songs is a musical odyssey and quite literal coming-of-age story punctuated with a whole bunch of uncensored, unsimulated sexual encounters: kind of like a porno version of High Fidelity?

Section 4: Lars Von Trier

Movie: Antichrist

  • Year of Release: 2003
  • Sex Act: heterosexual copulation

The sex in Antichrist is very beautiful, orchestrated to the swelling strains of fine operatic tones, but I hate to break it to ya - that's not Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg getting jiggy, it's their obliging porn doubles. Just be grateful that the horrifyingly graphic clitorectomy scene near the end is NOT real!

Movie: Nymphomaniac

  • Year of Release: 2013
  • Sex Act: just about everything you can think of

Danish badboy intellectual Lars Von Trier strikes again with his most recent sexfest, following the ignoble tradition of unsimulated sex in The Idiots (1998), Antichrist (2003) and a All About Anna (2005, which Trier produced). Nymphomaniac brings a gazillion sex acts to life via many big name actors like Christian Slater and Uma Thurman, and while the sexual smorgasbord on display is real, porn doubles are used for the money shots.
