It's no big secret that celebrities develop the taste of a certain kind of lifestyle. They surrounded by glamour and excess—not to mention a constant stream of people willing to do anything they ask.
That's where celebrity riders come in. When singers go on tour or actors go on location to film, they come with a list of demands that's called a rider. These documents cover everything from favorite foods to furniture color, and they can even specify the appropriate way to behave for all those encountering them. In my mind, every interaction is like dealing with Samantha James, a obliviously demanding character played by Anna Faris in Just Friends.
To our great benefit, sometimes these riders make their way online, and we can enjoy the fact that these celebrities can demand more in one weekend than I can in my entire lifetime. From the funny to the downright absurd, here are the 11 most ridiculous demands from celebrities.
Madge requires a brand new toilet seat in each of her dressing room bathrooms. To ensure that she is the only person to touch it, it must be wrapped in plastic to allow her people to open it. Then, the venue is to properly dispose of it immediately to avoid any sales on eBay to committed fans.
2. Lady Gaga
In one of the most bizarre examples on the list, Lady Gaga requires that all bars stop serving ice at least a half an hour before her performance. Apparently, she's afraid that her fans will throw the cubes at her while she is performing.
When Eminem performed at Tennent's Vital festival in Northern Ireland, he demanded a wooden pond swimming with expensive koi carp. Not only can that be up to $650 per fish, they had to build the pond from scratch to fit in his private backstage garden.
4. Katy Perry
Katy Perry's backstage demands are actually pretty run-of-the-mill, but its her staff's behavior that really worries her. Her tour rider has stringent rules specifically for her chauffeurs. They are not to open doors for her, ask for pictures, begin a conversation, talk to guests or fans, or look to the backseat in the rearview mirror.
5. George Clooney
According to The Sun, Clooney supposedly demanded that a hot tub, a custom-made beach hut, and a basketball court be installed next to his trailer when filming Gravity. Considering he wasn't even the star of that movie, those are even more elaborate asks.
6. Paula Abdul
It's not always the material demands that turn out to be the most shocking. In the case of Paula Abdul, the former American Idol and The X Factor host demands that her assistants comb through all her Tivo recordings for any mention of her and compile them all on a DVD. Even more megalomaniacal, she contractually obligates them to call her a "warrior, survivor and gift."
7. Marilyn Manson
Along with his androgyny and biting social commentary, Marilyn Manson is known for his often bizarre sense of humor. Maybe that explains why his celebrity rider includes a demand for a "bald, toothless hooker."
8. Dustin Diamond
While Dustin Diamond is most recognized for his role as Screech in Saved by the Bell, apparently the actor doesn't take too kindly to that distinction. When he is making an appearance (presumably doing comedy, but the true nature of his set alludes me), the venues are prohibited from using the name "Screech" for promotion. He threatens to fine them $100 for each add that includes the name.
9. Iggy Pop
The rider for Iggy Pop and the Stooges is famously hilarious. It's a 28-page document that spares no outlandish or downright impossible expense (even if they're requested in jest). My favorite is gives the choice to the supplier who can either provide a Bob Hope impersonator or Snow White's tiny friends. Or how the band puts it, "seven dwarves, dressed up as those dwarves out of that marvelous Walt Disney film about the woman who goes to sleep fro a hundred years after biting a poisoned dwarf, or maybe after pricking her finger on a rather sharp apple... or something. What was the name of that film? Was it Cinderella? Taller people are acceptable, of course. It's attitude, more than height, that's important here. Don't forget the pointy hats!"
10. Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey has maintained her "diva" title before that word was even in the public lexicon. It should come as no surprise that her backstage demands are highly specific and maybe even a little excessive. When she went to London to celebrate Christmas, she required a pink carpet, butterfly-shaped confetti, and 80 security guards. Oh, and she also wanted 20 white kittens and 100 doves for her party.
11. Will Ferrell
In typical Will Ferrell fashion, it's difficult to separate his serious requests from his funny ones in his backstage demands. While promoting Semi-Pro, Ferrell required an electric three-wheel mobility scooter, a 15-foot tall fake tree, and one rainbow on wheels. Yes, he wanted a rainbow on wheels, but luckily he was okay with it being painted on canvas.
