Star Trek 3 is plotting a course for a July 8, 2016 release and it looks like all the pieces are beginning to fall into place for the continuing adventures of the crew of the USS Enterprise. We'll finally reunite with Captain Kirk and the gang as they embark on their five year mission in the deep and dangerous depths of the new frontier.
A New Mission for Star Trek 3
What deadly mysteries will they encounter? What new species or unexplored worlds will they discover? Little is known about the finer details of the third entry in this rebooted Star Trek universe but since the first word emerged about Star Trek 3, it was agreed that is would indeed involve the crew having entered their five year mission and finally getting to explore the larger Star Trek universe.
Not too long ago it was announced that Simon Pegg was getting to perform double duty as co-writer on the new movie, aside from returning as the Enterprise's engineer, Scotty. He's been making the promotional rounds for his new movie Kill Me Three Times and of course it has provided for ample opportunity to get asked about how the Star Trek 3 script is moving along.
A Return to Star Trek Roots
Those who felt that Star Trek Into Darkness may have strayed too far from the original Star Trek's spirit of brains over brawn should be happy to hear that it is indeed the intention of Pegg and the team to bring back some of what made that original series so special to so many people. He told Variety:
“I think we just want to take it forward with the spirit of the TV show. It’s a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that’s where we want to take it, you know, where no man has gone before — where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a slighter more enlightened generation.”
This should ease some fears that die hard fans might have about new director Justin Lin's roots in the Fast & Furious franchise possibly resulting in Star Trek 3 focusing more on the action spectacle than the suspenseful battle of wits that made the show famous.
Klingon Commander Idris Elba?
It would seem that this script is doing well and progressing smoothly as not only is Simon Pegg seeming enthusiastic about things but recent reports have also put a face to the main villain of Star Trek 3 as well. It's looking like Idris Elba will be filling the antagonistic shoes that Benedict Cumberbatch and Eric Bana wore in the last two Star Trek movies.
Along with the casting news there is also a hint that the rumors Star Trek 3 could continue exploring the Klingons might be true. Could Idris Elba be stepping into a classic Klingon character like Commander Kor or will the new movie be creating a new Klingon commander for Captain Kirk to butt heads against?
From Asgard to Star Trek
I think many would agree that Idris Elba is a great choice to play a Klingon villain. His roles in The Wire and Luther have proven that he can certainly put on an intensely menacing tone when need be. While he has been a fine addition to the Asgard world of the Thor movies, and we'll be looking forward to seeing him pop up in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he's definitely the kind of actor that deserves a center stage role in something like Star Trek 3.
What do you think? Are you happy to hear that [Star Trek 3](movie:817262) will be returning to the spirit of the original series? Is Idris Elba's possible casting as a villainous Klingon good news?
