To more or less finish up a recent rundown on all the new characters expected to play a big part in Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens - following a look at Daisy Ridley's Rey, Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron & John Boyega's Finn and Adam Driver's Kylo Ren - let's take a look at what's out there regarding the mystery character that Domnhall Gleeson is playing.
Beware, young Jedi, for there be potential Star Wars Episode 7 spoilers below!
All of the initial reports, most of which I still regard as the most reliable, point toward one direction and one direction only in regards to Domnhall Gleeson's character. That is, of course, that Gleeson is playing Luke Skywalker's son sin Star Wars Episode 7. Of course, this could be completely based on some obvious distinguishing characteristics... I mean they're not twins or anything but on-screen father and son casting has done a lot worse than this.
The persistent rumor surrounding Domnhall Gleeson's character isn't just that he is the son of Luke Skywalker - but that he is working as a rogue agent, if you will. He has infiltrated his way into being a ranking member of the Imperial forces and is playing his role in a long term plan that Luke is working on to take out the remaining pieces of the Empire after the events of Return of the Jedi.
Domnhall Gleeson, Son of a Skywalker?
That's one rumor - another is that he has defected to the Empire after learning that the Republic forces, under the control of Princess Leia, have assembled their own weapon of mass destruction and he is working with the Empire to take out this threat.
It could very well be that there is a bit of both of these scenarios at play in Star Wars Episode 7. There have been rumors of a dangerous weapon being developed by the Republic, perhaps even unbeknownst to Leia, and when our heroes find out about this threat it could be that Comnhall Gleeson's character is just as surprised as anyone else and is in a position to do something about it.
Or, Son of a Tarkin?!
Then there are the other rumors - that perhaps Gleeson is Luke's son at all but someone else entirely. What doesn't seem to change is that he remains an Imperial officer in all of these scenarios - but one is especially entertaining. Could it be that Domnhall Gleeson is somehow Major Tarkin?!
Of course not the same character that Peter Cushing played in the original series - but a descendent of his. SW7N has some supporting evidence behind this theory such as a prop that was allegedly used in [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](movie:711158) with "Tarkin" written on it and the fact that the Tarkin name is still being used in ongoing related projects like Star Wars Rebels and Battlefront.
I still tend to side with the original theory if for no other reason than the fact that I really like the idea of Luke Skywalker having a grand plot that we will see unfold in the new trilogy. I also like the rumor that at some point we will see Domnhall Gleeson's Imperial officer turn around, activate his lightsaber and reveal his true Jedi colors. That moment would be completely badass.
What do you think?
