The ninth season of Doctor Who is currently filming ahead of airing this fall, and like many Whovians, I am finding it hard to be patient, and wait until autumn for the return of one of my favorite shows.
The biggest question for this season is whether or not it will see the end of Clara as the Doctor's companion - she's been around for two seasons so far, and the companions are well known for not lasting too long! There have already been many rumors about Jenna Coleman leaving the show, and the end of last season seemed to build up to her exit, but ended with her and the Doctor back on track as fellow adventurers.
Now the BBC has revealed that Maisie Williams, best known as Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, will be appearing in the new season, but they are remaining tightlipped about who (or what) she will be. Stephen Moffat has said that whatever her role, she's going to be pushing the doctor's limits.
It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.
It could be wishful thinking on my part, especially considering the amount of time Williams has to spend filming for [Game of Thrones](movie:817617), but I would love to see her building up to take over as the latest companion.
For one thing, I would be thrilled to see the crazy uncle dynamic strengthened with a new, teenage companion. As much as Rose and the Tenth Doctor remain one of my favorite story arcs from the reboot, I'm not keen on seeing another romantic pairing. Casting the significantly older Capaldi was a stroke of genius, and when he gave his opening speech to Clara about being the same Doctor (and not her boyfriend) I felt like the writers were speaking to all of us; telling us that we get a break from the adorably fresh-faced doctors and a return to the more classic pairings.
I also (much as I adore the character of Clara) feel that it's time to see someone new. I loved her original introduction, I'm into her title as the Impossible Girl, and I was a much bigger fan than I thought I would be of the most recent storyline with Danny Pink. Now, however, I feel like it's time for something new. The constantly changing roster of characters keeps the show fresh, and this is as good a time as any to make that change.
I really love the work that Williams has done so far, and I feel like she would make an incredible companion, but even if she's just joining the iconic show for an episode or two, I cannot wait to see it!
