As a cop and before the zombie outbreak, Rick Grimes could never have imagined in his worst nightmares the people he would have to massacre in order to try and stay alive and protect his family and friends.

But in The Walking Dead universe everything changed, and it has sadly become a necessity to despatch people who through fear, panic and selfishness in this new world have gone crazy.

Rick has had to kill countless of the undead and over 30 human souls over five seasons of the show- here is his greatest and perhaps most justified top 5 kills.

5. TOMAS - EPISODE: SICK, SEASON 3

Poor Tomas just couldn't be trusted once Rick and the group had taken the prison. After battling a horde of zombies, Tomas tried to get Rick killed by them. After the zombies were sorted out, Rick confronted Tomas and sliced his skull with a machete without hesitation. Perhaps Rick's first brutal kill.

4. JOE - EPISODE: A, SEASON 4

Rick, Carl and Michonne are ambushed by Joe and his biker gang which at this time includes Daryl. Joe is ready to execute Rick, and another member looks ready to rape Carl. Big mistake.

After Joe asks Rick, "what you gonna do now, sport?", Rick responds as only Rick can. He leans forward and without any weapons takes a leaf out of the zombies book and rips into Joe's neck gorging on his jugular, spits it out and Joe drops dead to the floor. Job done.

3. TERMINUS BUTCHER - EPISODE: NO SANCTUARY, SEASON 5

From the jaws of death, Carol's commando like blowing up of Terminus saves her friends and the butchers are avenged on with no mercy by Rick.

Rick makes sure to stab this butcher in the neck and then stomach- and is as you can expect angry as hell whilst doing it. He was this close from death himself.

2. SHANE WALSH - EPISODE: BETTER ANGELS, SEASON 2

Certainly the most hardest kill and most emotional for Rick was when he had little choice to kill his childhood friend and fellow police officer, Shane Walsh.

But Shane was turning into a ruthless being and could not fit into the group- though it could be argued that we have seen the same from Rick on at least two ocassions since Shane's death.

However in this mix was Shanes infatuation with Rick's wife Lori, who he had an affair with when they both thought Rick had died in hospital. And Shane just wouldn't let this drop. He also killed good people at random. Shane wasn't such a bad person in the real world, but this nightmare had turned Shane nuts, and he had to be dealt with. So Rick tricked him and stabbed him in the heart- though to be fair Shane had plans to kill Rick. Kill or be killed and all that.....

1. GARETH - EPISODE: FOUR WALLS AND A ROOF, SEASON 5

Gareth and the cannibals ambush the group at the church, however Rick and co ambush Gareth and co and play them at their own game.

Gareth pleads for his life, whilst getting his fingers shot off. But Rick doesn't care. He realizes that this group of cannibals who have already partially eaten their friend Bob are bad news.

Rick keeps his promise to kill Gareth with the machete and hacks his guts to pieces. The rest of the group follow suit and kill the other cannibals, it's violent and bloody.

Father Gabriel emerges afterwards with a 24/7 crying face and exclaims "this is the house of God", to which Maggie says, "no, this is just four walls and a roof."

This was a huge kill for Rick- as he was seconds away from being murdered in cold blood and eaten himself. He literally had no choice and this kill hammered home what he and his group have to do to survive this zombie holocaust.
