Fans of the Shrek Cinematic Universe - and yes, with four feature films, one spin-off movie, and a handful of straight-to-video shorts and video games I think it qualifies as a universe - might be in luck!

In a podcast with Empire, voice of Puss in Boots, Antonio Banderas hinted that everyone's favorite Ogre might return for Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives and 40 Thieves.

Banderas made the following statement regarding the rumor:

I heard some rumors that Shrek may be coming back. That would be great. [Slips into Puss in Boots voice.] Shrek doing a cameo in my movie. Uh huh! [Laughs, returns to normal voice.] I would like that.

I would like that too. Please, DreamWorks, can we make this happen?

It's been five years since we Shrek, famously voiced by Mike Myers, appear on the big screen last in Shrek Forever After. In case you forgot, this is where we left off with his character:

Just because the fourth film was labeled "the final chapter" doesn't mean that we're not ready for the character's return in a different storyline!

If Shrek makes an appearance in the film, I would, of course, like to see other characters like Fiona, Donkey, Gingy and the gang to come back as well. But we also can't forget that the land of Far Far Away has vast potential to reach out into other fairy tales and legends!

So here are a few stories that the Shrek universe hasn't really touched upon yet that would be great additions to Puss' tale:

Alice in Wonderland

Alice apparently made a very brief cameo in the first Shrek movie when all of the fairy tale creatures are being delivered to Lord Farquaad. Why not have Puss end up in Wonderland for a spell? Seeing Puss face off against the Red Queen in a game of croquet would be a pretty hilarious scene.

Beauty and the Beast

Out of all the princess characters that appeared in Shrek the Third, the princess I missed most was definitely Belle. She could have been so easily added to the princess gang! Also, there could have been plenty of sassy jabs made towards her about her love of hairy men. Maybe she can be included in Puss in Boots 2 and have a slight crush on our furry friend!

The Wizard of Oz

Alright, so The Wizard of Oz isn't quite a fairy tale, but I think it could be fun to see Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion all traveling alongside Puss and company. They did touch on the Wicked Witch angle a bit, but I think The Wizard of Oz is a wealth of animated potential!

The Little Mermaid

Ariel - or a mermaid that definitely resembles Ariel - only made a brief appearance in Shrek 2 when she snuck a romantic beach makeout with the newly married Ogre. Fiona sees this accidental indiscretion and throws Ariel into the ocean to be attacked by sharks.

While the shark attack may have been the end of Ariel, I would still love to see her come back and have her nautical tales told in Puss in Boots 2 with Puss sailing across high seas.

These are just a few of my ideas, but as long as Shrek shows up I'll be a happy camper. Let's be honest, Shrek's story was never really...Ogre. *awwww yeeeah*

What do you guys think? Of these famous fairy tales, which would you like to see expanded upon in Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives and 40 Thieves?
