Kingdom Hearts 3 is still a while away from its release date for the XBOX One and PS4. Therefore, it's been left in player's hands in terms of anticipating the worlds and characters that we could see in the final instalment of this particular story arc. However, though we desperately asked for it to happen a few months ago, it seems we won't be seeing a Robin Williams tribute in Kingdom Hearts 3.
Due to a rather unique legal move, and an attempt at the protection of his family, Robin Williams ensured that his name and legacy would be kept safe from harm after his passing. It's difficult knowing that we can't see him in anymore films, however, this move means he won't even be mentioned in advertising or movies for many years.
Kingdom Hearts 3: No Genie Following Robin Williams' Ban
Essentially, Robin Williams has ensured that there is a ban on his image until the year 2039. His family are currently undergoing an awful battle over the rights of his estate. It's a painful one I'm sure, though there are certainly some damaging alternative motives affecting the conclusion of the process.
The main reason for Williams' ban, was in order to protect his legacy and family against future tax liabilities. In the innovative legal step, Williams had transferred all rights to his identity to a nonprofit organisation in the event of his death. All ownership rights to Williams' "name, voice, signature, photograph, likeness and right of privacy/publicity" come under the charitable Windfall Foundation and cannot be used until August 2039.
The Hollywood Reporter has suggested that the move will save his family from the similar problems that faced Michael Jackson's estate, which now apparently owes a whopping $500 million in taxes and $200 million in penalties due to taxes from publicity rights. A well made move indeed.
Therefore, does this really mean that the Genie cannot be a character in one of Kingdom Hearts 3's worlds on its release date? Everyone that has played the Genie before has imitated the voice and performance of Robin Williams. The character is an extension of his personality. However, Disney may be in full control of the Genie's presence and image, but our dreams for seeing Robin Williams commemorated in The Legend of Zelda Wii U and Kingdom Hearts 3 are most certainly dashed.
One thing is for sure though, his voice cannot be imitated for Kingdom Hearts 3. It seems the pain over the loss of this extraordinary man is still continuing for fans all over the world. His presence will be missed in Kingdom Hearts 3. But would we still see the Genie? Would it be the same if he didn't sound like Williams on Kingdom Hearts 3's release date?
