Did you watch [The Walking Dead](series:201193) season finale this past Sunday? According to the numbers, your answer is probably "yes". If you missed it though or have it taped, don't worry, there are no spoilers to be found here. But you better get on that because pretty much everybody and their mom already saw it and will probably ruin it for you if you aren't careful!
The 90-minute season 5 finale broke a lot of records, including the show's highest ratings in history, pulling in 15.8 million total viewers and 10.4 million in the optimal advertising demographic of 18-49 years old.
This 18-49 range is very important, because it means more valuable viewers to the show. Hit FOX show [Empire](movie:784585) actually had more total viewers (16.5 million) for its opening season's finale, but after some adjustments it put up a 6.4 rating, which at the time seemed incredible - however, TWD scored an UNCANNY 8.2 rating! Those 18-49 year olds really came up big for TWD.
Also, AMC put out a press release stating that this is the first time that all 16 episodes of the hit series have been ranked within the top 50 telecasts on TV. Times are clearly changing... nobody would have expected a horror tv series airing on cable to be able to do that. It's safe to say TWD has surpassed anything anyone ever could have imagined when they signed on with AMC and aired the pilot back in 2010.
If you're afraid you're going to miss TWD too much over the summer, have no fear! The spin-off comes out this summer, is set in LA, and looks awesome. Check out the promo below.
