It has now been almost 8 years since we climbed into a HEV suit and ran around battering headcrabs with a crowbar. A lot has happened since then, and the kids born when Half Life 2: Episode 2 was actually released, are probably now just about sentient enough to actually the play the game. It's thoughts like this which make me feel very old.

Of course, the Half Life series is a veritable sacred monolith of the gaming community, and its fabled third edition has similarly taken on an almost mythical status. For the most part, fans seem willing to wait for the Third Coming of Gordon Freeman, but if you need a little something to make biding the time easier, let me introduce Transmissions: Element 120.

Transmissions: Element 120, which took two years to complete, is a new community made mod developed with Half Life 2's Source Engine. However, it is also set within the Half Life universe and acts an an unofficial and non-canonical continuation of Dr. Freeman's story. Set in an unknown creepy locale, the atmospheric single-player story gives us more of what we expect from a Half Life game, as well as some added extras. Most notably, Transmissions introduces a modified gravity gun which allows for extraordinary leaps. Check out the trailer below:

As well as creating a new single player campaign, Transmission: Element 120 also acts to update the now aged, but resilient, Source Engine. Included within the mod are tweaks which include:

  • Enhanced dynamic lighting
  • Integrated Source Shader Editor 0.5 for enhanced post processing & lighting
  • Improved support for complex physics structure
  • Support for super massive physics objects
  • Pre-processed AO
  • Improved AI and group behavior on multiple AI types

Want to get your hands on Transmission: Element 120? Well, you can download it for free from their homepage. However, if you enjoy the mod, make sure to give it some love on Steam Greenlight. If it gets enough upvotes it could become officially available on the Steam platform - vastly increasing the amount of people who'll play the mod.
