Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, Lost River, was met with mixed reactions when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year - inspiring both cheers and boos in seemingly equal measure.
It seems acting ability wasn't the issue, as the psychological/fantasy thriller certainly boasts an impressive cast, including Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan, Ian De Caestecker, Reda Kateb, Matt Smith, Ben Mendelsohn and horror icon Barbara Steele. So what was the problem? Well, I'm still stumped, as a new featurette/trailer for Lost River also seems to show off quite a bit of artistic and directorial flair. Check it out the rather gruesome clip below:
Lost River is a dark fairy tale about love, family and the fight for survival in the face of danger. In the virtually abandoned city of Lost River, Billy (Christina Hendricks), a single mother of two, is led into a macabre underworld in her quest to save her childhood home and hold her family together. Her teenage son Bones (Iain De Casestecker) discovers a mystery about the origins of Lost River that triggers his curiosity and sets into motion an unexpected journey that will test his limits and the limits of those he loves.
Unfortunately, the critical reaction to Lost River at Cannes apparently forced Warner Bros. to lose some confidence in Gosling's first project, eventually leading the studio to limit the film's theatrical release. Despite this, Lost River will be arriving on VOD platforms on April 10th, meaning you should be able to see his directorial effort wherever you happen to be.
