Michael Bay's name is synonymous with heart-pounding action movies. His effect-heavy films are visually stunning, but are often criticized for flat characters and weak storylines. His 2001 movie Pearl Harbor often receives the brunt of such complaints. The fictional love story set within the historical context of one of the most devastating attacks on American soil just didn't quite hit the mark. The romantic drama attracted a lot of attention — and the cast may have been largely responsible for that.
With such a monumental event as the backdrop, it's easy to see why the movie attracted such an amazing cast. So, 15 years after the movie's official US release, let's take a look back over the star-studded folks who flocked to its casting call all those years ago.
Capt. Rafe McCawley (played by Ben Affleck)
Nurse Lt. Evelyn Johnson (played by Kate Beckinsale)
Capt. Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett)
Nurse Sandra (played by Jennifer Garner)
Nurse Betty Bayer (played by Jaime King)
Lt. Red Winkle (played by Ewen Bremner)
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (played by Jon Voight)
Lt. Col. James Doolittle (played by Alec Baldwin)
Petty Officer Doris Miller (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.)
Talk about an all-star cast! Though the film received highly critical reviews, the movie netted almost $450 million worldwide — not a bad return on a $140 million budget. While Pearl Harbor may have been better depicted in a more serious fashion like Saving Private Ryan, at least the cast provided ample recognition for moviegoers. Pearl Harbor may not have been Michael Bay's most popular movie, but at least the casting was spot on!
