Captain America: Civil War starts shooting tomorrow, April 1st, no fooling! If you're in the Atlanta I would suggest keeping your most reliable camera at the ready as there will soon be an influx of superheroes descending upon your city.
The Captain America 3 Superhero Convention
Not only will there be Robert Downey, Jr and Chris Evans sitings aplenty, as the central conflict of Captain America 3 does of course revolve around Iron-Man and Captain America duking it out over the decision of the world's governments wanting to implement a Superhuman Registration Act, but the movie is looking like it will be something of a Marvel superhero (and super villain) convention. Good choice of location then, as Atlanta is known as a big hub for conventions.
So who is expected to join the Captain America: Civil War party then? Possible spoilers for Captain America 3 may follow, be warned.
The Winter Soldier
Let's start with a bot of the obvious. While many have been calling Captain America: Civil War by the informal title of Avengers 3 or Avengers 2.5 - it is still Captain America 3 in the chronology of Steve Rogers' story. So we'll definitely be seeing the return of Bucky Barnes and the Winter Soldier. We left Bucky as he was trying to come to terms with his place in history, much like Steve did in the first Captain America and shake the Hydra brainwashing that turned him into The Winter Soldier.
Will he have a role in the assassination of Captain America like he did at the end of the comic book series? Will he uncover the real culprit and take over the role of Captain America and the legacy of Steve Rogers? This guy is definitely one to keep an eye on during Captain America 3.
The other big holdover from Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the role that Frank Grillo played of Brock Rumlow. He was last seen barely making it out of the big bang of SHIELD offices in one piece. Brock was covered in rubble and a bit on the extra crispy side but he is expected to come out of this in a new and improved Crossbones form. It's not certain if Hydra is going to do some Terrigen Mist experiments to give him some of the superpowers he developed in the comics, but chances are he'll pose an even bigger threat to Cap than he did in Winter Soldier.
German actor Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds) is one of the actors making his Marvel debut in Captain America 3. Yes, the infamous Baron Zemo will be introduced in Captain America Civil War, adding to the list of problems the in-fighting superheroes will have to face in the movie. This will likely be the new head of Hydra and boss of Crossbones. Expect some crazy psychic abilities and possibly some connections to the ongoing Infinity Stone storyline with Baron Zemo. The Baron is fond of Moonstones and Bloodstones and the kinds of Kree gems that can give him all sorts of superpowers.
"What about the good guys," you might be asking. Well, if we don't get a sneak peek at Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther in Avengers: Age of Ultron first, he'll be making his debut in Captain America: Civil War. It's expected that the events in Avengers 2, for Black Panther is could especially be the Hulkbuster fight in South Africa, will be attracting the attention of the world's leaders to propose initiating a Superhuman Registration Act. And that would of course include the leader of Wakanda, who just so happens to also be a superhuman. Expect this guy to side with the pro-registration side of Iron-Man when the lines get drawn.
Perhaps the most anticipated of Marvel debuts is the new face of Spider-Man. With the recent casting rumors surrounding Mateus Ward - it appears that Sony and Marvel are indeed looking for an age appropriate actor to play a high school attending Peter Parker. Since he would be the only Marvel character in the current MCU to have a secret identity, it isn't clear if this will be the same kind of issue it was for Peter Parker in the comic book series. But you should still expect Spider-Man to play the role of the undecided superhero that is torn between the two groups.
The Avengers Disassembled
Since Black Widow and Falcon played a major part in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that we'll see their return in Captain America: Civil War. Hawkeye was a bit of a late surprise arrival on the scene but an appearance by Jeremy Renner did indeed get confirmed not too long ago. All these guys could easily take a place on the side of Captain America side of the debate - Hawkeye seems to have a kindred rebellious spirit.
Other superheroes with Avengers affiliations that are expected, but not confirmed as of yet, to appear in Captain America 3 are War Machine, Vision, Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver (if he makes it out of Avengers 2 alive). These characters would likely make up Iron Man's team in battle. While the Maximoff kids start off as having a big grudge against Tony Stark, I would expect Scarlet Witch and Vision to make some strides in their relationship that might keep them on the side of Stark and also want to continue being viewed as good guys and not troublemakers who once associated with Ultron.
Expect Thor and Hulk to be MIA from this showdown. Thor will be busy prepping for Thor: Ragnarok and Hulk will either be in hiding or locked up after the events of Avengers 2. It's likely we'll see a good amount of SHEILD presence with Fury and Agent Hill in attendance if not Coulson and some TV agents as well.
I wouldn't hold your breath for Ant-Man, Wasp or Hank Pym to be showing up to the party. I think Marvel put the world of Ant-Man on the other side of the country for a reason. But who knows, anything is possible in this crazy MCU. One thing is for certain, [Captain America: Civil War](movie:994409) will be a packed event.
