8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter may have only been on for three seasons, but it was funny and touching enough to stay in our hearts many years later.
The show followed the Hennessy family, centering around John Ritter's fatherly character. Tragically, John passed away during the show's filming, but his influence clearly lived on in later seasons. It goes without saying that we were all fortunate to have a few final moments of John doing what John did best, and that's just one of the things that made 8 Simple Rules a standout.
In honor of John and his lasting legacy, let's take a look at what the cast of 8 Simple Rules has been doing since the show wrapped 10 years ago.
Bridget Hennessy - Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting
Who could've guessed that the lovably dim-witted Bridget would go on to be one of the biggest TV stars of our generation? Kaley Cuoco brought that same kind of unassuming charm to the role of Penny in [The Big Bang Theory](series:200751), a show which earns Cuoco a whopping $1 million per episode. In 2015, she's looking to make the big move to film, appearing alongside Kevin Hart in the comedy [The Wedding Ringer](movie:1225714) and the upcoming drama [Burning Bodhi](movie:2064404).
Kerry Hennessy - Amy Davidson
Even as a kid, I always found it so funny that Kerry was considered the "plain but smart" daughter when, in reality, Amy Davidson is clearly a stunning individual. Since 8 Simple Rules wrapped, she's appeared in small roles on popular TV shows like cCSI: Crime Scene Investigation, House M.D., and Bones. She and Kaley Cuoco still appear to be good friends, even going on vacation together back in July!
Rory Hennessy - Martin Spanjers
Rory was the typical TV younger brother who loves to stir the pot, and Martin Spanjers always played him with a kind of maniacal smirk. Since his time as a Hennessy, Spanjers appeared as guest in Grey's Anatomy, iCarly, and Saving Grace. He also had a recurring role on Disney's Good Luck, Charlie and played Young Sam Merlotte in [True Blood](series:200767).
Jim Egan - James Garner
Cate's father, Jim, came onto the scene to offer some patriarchal guidance and fill the absence left by John Ritter. Old Hollywood star James Garner appeared in The Notebook around the same time as 8 Simple Rules, and he lent his voice to movies like Battle for Terra and Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam. Garner passed away in 2014 at the age of 86, leading many of his sitcom co-stars to write tributes online.
C.J. Barnes - David Spade
C.J. was Cate's nephew who came onto the scene the same time as her father. He added extra comic relief during the family's most trying time. Since 8 Simple Rules, David Spade's TV work includes starring roles in The Showbiz Show with David Spade and Rules of Engagement. He's also made bank appearing in movies like Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2, and next up we'll see him in Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser.
Cate Hennessy - Katey Sagal
The incomparable Katey Sagal brought her trademark wit and protective instincts to the role of Cate Hennessy, a mother who kept the family together following her husband's death. After 8 Simple Rules, she's gone on to play more strong, complex women including Leela on [Futurama](series:200475) and Gemma Teller Morrow on [Sons of Anarchy](series:201186), a role that nabbed her a Golden Globe. In 2014, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Paul Hennessy - John Ritter
Last, but certainly not least, is the late, great John Ritter. Ritter tragically passed away during production of 8 Simple Rules's second season, leading the show to make a tribute episode to his character entitled "Goodbye." It was truly heartbreaking to watch the family go through the kind of grieving that was happening in real-life, as Ritter's death was so unexpected and sudden. Sadly, his death was part of the reason the ratings declined, and the show just wasn't the same without him.
