I really don't know how Marvel and (Lord) Joss Whedon manage to do it, but despite Avengers: Age of Ultron being firmly centered in the pop culture consciousness, the brains behind the feature just keep on surprising in enigmatic style.
On a list detailing the cast members who will be attending the Age of Ultron red carpet premiere, two surprise names managed to jump off the list creating yet another fresh wildfire of speculation. Julie Delpy and Linda Cardellini are coming along for the ride.
If you're unsure as to who Whedon's latest great cast members are, Delpy is best known for her roles in Richard Linklater's Before trilogy and Cardellini had starring roles in the seminal Freaks and Geeks, before heading to stardom with E.R. and Mad Men.
Here's that cheeky red carpet press release:
Whedon had already hinted at the super secret special appearances to come in AoU, and we were all expecting Captain Marvel (who will reportedly be making her MCU debut in AoU), but this is interesting news because both actors are incredibly talented performers who have been at the top of their game for what feels like an age.
But who could they be playing? Actresses of their calibre wouldn't be brought on board as mere cannon fodder and I doubt they'll be playing future Avengers, despite Cardellini's striking resemblance to Wasp (that'd be interesting, right?), so who dammit?!
Scarlet Witch's (Elizabeth Olson) incredibly powerful abilities of mind control will play an important factor in delving into the Avengers' past, bringing up memories, fears and generally f*cking with their heads, or making them "trip balls" as Whedon so aptly put it.
Hence Hayley Atwell (Agent Peggy Carter) and Idris Elba's (Heimdall, Friend of Thor) inclusions in the star studded roster.
It may be a slight long shot, but I think that Delpy may be playing either Black Widow's trainer, or some kind of high ranking official within that program. In the second Avengers trailer, a hand strongly forces a younger Black Widow down onto a gurney. Could that belong to Delpy?
We know that Widow was trained as a highly skilled assassin back in the heyday of the Soviet Union, so maybe. Delpy could even appear as a ballet instructor with maternal instincts. Who knows.
In AoU, two different iterations of Tony Stark's father Howard will be making an appearance in the forms of Dominic Cooper and John Slattery, at different stages of the entrepreneur's life.
It's possible that Cardellini could be playing Maria Stark, Tony's mother who, along with Howard, was killed in a "planned" car accident orchestrated by Hydra.
Could Scarlet Witch introduce this blast from Tony's deep memory?
What do you think?
This reveal adds more gusto to a never ending list of why Avengers: Age of Ultron is going to be utterly fantastic! To say "I'm excited" is somewhat of an under-exaggeration, I'm honestly really, very f*cking stoked!
Hurry up and assemble already!
