I'm pretty sure that when it comes to our collective take on Bethesda's E3 conference this year, the presence of Fallout 4 is a given. If it's not, I say we storm the stage people! Start our own real-life Fallout...anyway. With the next installment of Fallout just around the corner, players are speculating on what new features Bethesda will include in-game. But also what gameplay features they are likely to remove or alter.

The VATS system in Fallout 3 was a way in which Bethesda could embrace the turn-based combat of the two previous games, and incorporate them into a real-time open world game. It's a bit of genius really and a hell of a lot of fun when that devastating blow lands. But with the industry evolving so rapidly, could we see Fallout 4 abandon this system for more real-time combat like in Skyrim?

Will VATS Be a Gameplay Feature in Fallout 4?

Personally, I'd really hate to see it go. The VATS system was so unique to a modern open world game. No big publisher would be willing to see combat pause the action of scenes in this way. They're too afraid of narrowing their potential audience down to those who are willing to accept a kind of turn based model. Not enough money you know.

Therefore, some players are worried that the system may get some serious reworking, or possibly even removed. Maybe Bethesda could adopt a system whereby combat wouldn't be so intrusive on the flow of the action, hopefully not in the style of Skyrim though. Perhaps we could see a new system whereby time slows down a bit rather than completely pausing, therefore still leaving us vulnerable to attack.

One thing is for sure, I really don't want Fallout 4 to become a classic shooter. If the system we all know and love was completely abandoned, I think a lot of the true fans of the series would be seriously disheartened. Fallout would loose its defining characteristics if its combat became completely real-time. I would settle for a slowed down version of VATS, but not a complete removal.

What do you think Fallout fans? Is the VATS system a defining element of what makes Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas great games for you? Would you feel betrayed if the combat system became completely real-time like in Skyrim? Let us know in the comments and be sure to tell us what you think of this Fallout 4 race selection option too!
