I keep telling myself I'll write about more than just superheroes someday...

So, on April 2nd, Marvel released a fourth Avengers 2: Age of Ultron tv spot. What we basically got from it was a few new lines of dialogue, a couple new shots, and being re-introduced to the Big Six of the Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye.

If you hate spoilers of any kind, DO NOT READ ON!!!!

Before we get to the meat of the article, I'd like to highlight a couple one-liners!

My favorite line of the entire trailer!

Hawkeye, being awesome, as usual!
Hawkeye, being awesome, as usual!

"We're fighting an army of robots, and I have a bow and arrow!"

Not bad, old man!

My favorite Avenger!

"It slipped out!" Good to see the man out of time getting comfortable with some sarcasm!

Okay, now onto the good stuff!

Black Widow was using Captain America's shield!

What is happening?
What is happening?

Okay, when I watched the Avengers 2 trailer the first time, I was curious as to what a shot of Captain America hitting an Ultron drone with his shield was doing in the middle of [Black Widow](movie:1070824)'s feature segment. So, like any other fan who's obsessed with Marvel would do, I re-watched the trailer a couple hundred times. Then, at around my 137th watch, I realized it wasn't Cap kicking tin-butt with his mighty shield, it was Black Widow kicking tin-butt with Cap's shield!

For someone who is a dedicated Captain America fan, this came as a huge shock to me! In comic book history, there is a very short list of people who can properly wield Cap's almighty shield, and Black Widow is not on that list! (if you wanna read the entire list and more on Captain America, check out my article on it here)

So, this could mean a few different things fr the story of Age of Ultron!

Theory One: Cap dropped his shield and Widow picked it up

Probably the most likely option, considering its already been dropped once in previous trailers. This theory involves her not knowing full proper use of the shield. Most people are able to use the shield to absorb blows and can use it offensively in melee combat, but are unable to properly throw the shield as a weapon. My guess is she can't get the throwing part down.

Theory Two: Captain America has trained her in use of the shield

Perhaps in the events preceding The Winter Soldier
Perhaps in the events preceding The Winter Soldier

Captain America has been known to train many superheroes in the comic books. It is possible that since Steve and Natasha were in the same S.H.I.E.L.D. team pre-Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he trained her in the use of his shield as a contingency plan if he ever was rendered helpless. This could mean that Cap lent her the shield for a portion of their mission where he needed it less than she did.

Theory Three: Captain America is wounded and cannot use the shield

Like this, but with less Cap being dead (for now)!
Like this, but with less Cap being dead (for now)!

While killing Steve rogers pre-Civil War would be an outright sin, there is no saying that Cap can't get hurt and heal between the movies. He is, after all, the third most vulnerable Avenger, only in front of Hawkeye and Black Widow herself. While I doubt Cap will be severely injured before the final battle, Marvel has been known to pull a few quick ones our way (Hydra infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D., anyone?)

Regardless of what actually happens, I think its pretty cool that Black Widow is able to use the shield properly, at least to some degree of effectiveness!

***UPDATE*** It seems I posted this article one day too soon, as Marvel released the final trailer for Age of Ultron today! In this new trailer, we get a shot of Black Widow throwing the shield back at Captain America, as well as a shot of Cap throwing the shield to her, then she catches it, and smashes an Ultron drone with it! I am looking forward to this movie even more now! It also seems that Widow may have the same magnet thing on her arm that Cap has for the shield, or maybe the shield still has the straps on it. We shall see come May 1st!
