True Detective season 2 is only months away now. While there hasn't been an official date for the premier episode, we're looking at a summer start for the new season. But since they're still wrapping up filming now, it could be late summer/early fall when True Detective finds its circular path back to HBO. But we've gotten a pretty good sense of where things are heading for this dark and mysterious look at the seedy underbelly of California politics.

Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch & Rachel McAdams

We know the main trio of true detectives are Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams. Colin Farrell, with a new obsession worthy mustache, plays Ray Velcoro, a California state police officer who is caught up in the web of corruption and mob ties that is weighing down the police department. Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a California Highway Patrol officer and war veteran suffering from PTSD who is trying to escape from underneath a sexual assault scandal that not only nearly cost him his job but also his relationship.

Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a local town sheriff who joins Farrell and Kitsch in trying to solve the murder at the center of True Detective's second season. As you would expect from True Detective, no one is without their dark past and McAdams' personal rack of issues involves gambling and alcoholism as her vices of choice. She's trying to escape a troubled upbringing and also working an investigation that has to do with a former childhood classmate of hers. Even money this missing friend may have something to do with the central murder at hand.

Murder on the California Expressway

So what is this central murder in True Detective season 2 all about? Well, according to some early plot leaks this season will kick off when the body of Ben Caspar, a corrupt City Manager, is found dumped on a California highway near the picturesque city of Big Sur. The body is found with a burnt-out eye, missing genitals and satanic symbols carved into it. Further muddying the waters is the fact that he was heavily involved in brokering a deal for a high-speed commuter rail to be approved and resolve California's world renowned gridlock issues.

Vince Vaughn is Frank Semyon, a career criminal who was trying to go legit but ended going into business with Ben Caspar and becomes what appears to be the main suspect in this murder. It's discovered that Caspar has ties to an S&M club and his shady dealings with Semyon only serve to deepen the mysterious death of this California political figure.

True Detective Season 2 Supporting Cast

So that's our main cast of corrupt and damaged character, who else is on the call sheet for the second season of True Detective? Well, topping the list is Lolita Davidovich as Taylor Kitsch's mom who's past as a showgirl stripper is sure to cause some complications for the guy. Adria Arjona is playing Kitsch's girlfriend Emily, who is struggling to come to terms with the aforementioned sex scandal that he ended up involved in when he made some on the job mistakes.

On the Colin Farrell side of the story, Abigail Spencer is playing Farrell's ex who has her own history of past sexual assault. Actor Afemo Omilami has a recurring role as Police Chief Holloway who is expected to be butting heads with Kitsch and Farrell and is likely in the conflicted role of trying to solve the murder while dealing with the corruption and trying to ensure that certain things remain a secret after the investigation is done.

As for Vince Vaughn's character, Kelly Reilly plays his wife who's described as being quite aware about Vaughn's shady dealings and criminal background. Actor Chris Kerson has been cast in the role of Nails - a tough-guy in Vine Vaughn's employ who gets his handle from being the survivor of an incident involving a nail guy. This guy has "fan favorite" written all over him.

Other actors appearing in True Detective's second season with more mysterious roles are Ashley Hinshaw as a "troubled starlet" and Leven Rambin as "a beauty with a history of drug problems". Either of these two sound like they could be related to the mystery of the childhood friend that Rachel McAdams is also trying to uncover. Helping her out with this is actor Michael Irby who plays Elvis, McAdams partner in the Sheriff's office. How musician/actor Rick Springfield's casting plays into all of this is anyone's guess.

True Detective Season 2 Directors

Well, there you have pretty much all of the casting news that is out there on season two of True Detective. Surprisingly, less is known about who is stepping into the director's chair for this season. Cary Fukunaga memorably handled all the directorial duties for the first season but we know he is only a producer this time around.

Former Fast & Furious and soon to be Star Trek director Justin Lin is on the books for handling the first two episodes of True Detective's second season but strangely very little information is around about who else has come aboard. Interestingly, two high profile directors have been approached but nothing concrete has been announced yet. Both William Friedkin, who was part of the McConaissance with Killer Joe, and Andrew Dominik (Assassination of Jesse James, Killing Them Softly) are rumored to be among the possible directors for season two.
