Gotham Season 1 has been on a bit of a hiatus as the show gears up for the final four episodes of the season. It's already been over a month since the last episode revealed a bit more about The Dollmaker's Shutter Island like facility that Fish Mooney has found herself trapped in but next Monday will see the show picking up on these loose threads as well as introducing a big new villain in Milo Ventimiglia's The Ogre.
Gotham Season 1 Returns on April 13th
From the press release for Episode 19, which is entitled Beast of Prey:
“Gordon and Bullock investigate a cold case involving the Ogre, a serial killer who targets young women in Gotham City. Meanwhile, Fish plots her escape from the Dollmaker, and Bruce and Selina confront Reggie.”
I had to double check to see if there was an Ogre in Batman's past and it seems like there was a brief appearance by a Frankenstein type of character who had a brother named The Ape. Both were the result of some mad scientist type experimentation but neither of these characters seemed to catch on for more than one storyline in 1996.
Preview Gotham's New Serial Killer
Seeing as Milo Ventimiglia's character is playing a serial killer - it looks like this Ogre is indeed a wholly new creation of the show. We'll see if Gotham does a bit of a wink and keeps the name of the Ogre's alter-ego Michael Adams or not. Here is a nice two minute preview featurette that Gotham put together to tease the show's return and highlight this new villain.
I have to admit, I'm liking the sound of The Ogre and how this guy isn't just another bad guy of the week that the show has been mostly sticking to. He's the kind of serial killer that not only is going after young women, but women that have ties to the cops that have been trying to track him down. This time it's personal, as they like to say. It'll be interesting to see if he can stick around for more than one episode.
Bruce Wayne & Catwoman On the Hunt
The plot description also tells us that we'll be seeing the return of Reggie - the former friend of Alfred who got bought out by the corrupt folks on the board at Wayne Enterprises. I like that Gotham is looking to finally give lil' Catwoman, Selina Kyle something to do as she uses her street smarts to help lil' Bruce Wayne to track this guy down.
I've had some complaints about how Gotham, outside of Fish Mooney, gives very little for the big cast of female characters to do, and it looks like the return episode is already making some good changes to their standard operating procedure to fix this. I think it's been at least ten episodes or so since Selina Kyle actually did something that moved the plot along. Keep up the good work, Gotham.
Gotham Season Two Villains
The cast and crew of Gotham recently held a panel discussion at WonderCon in California and answered some questions about where the show is heading. Of course, one question that was raised was who else from the extensive rouges gallery of Batman villains can fans expect to see creeping on to the show's second season.
Well, it sounds like they've certainly been saving some of the best as the producers confirmed that they'll be introducing such classic Batman foes as Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Hugo Strange, Tommy Elliott, and the Mad Hatter. Tommy Elliott is better known as Hush - one of the best modern era Batman villains that DC has come out with in the 2000s. Seeing as he was revealed to be a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne's I wouldn't expect too much villainy from the kid - but the show could definitely be giving an interesting storyline to young Master Bruce.
The show will definitely be needing to fill the major villain hole that will be left upon Jada Pinkett Smith's departure from the show as Fish Mooney. Fish and Penguin were the two main recurring villains, or anti-heroes, depending on your take, and we'll have to see if someone like Edward Nigma will finally snap and step up as The Riddler and as a new recurring villain or if the show has other plans on how to deal with Fish Mooney's exit.
At WonderCon they teased a bit about what will happen on Gotham when Fish Mooney finally escapes from The Dollamker's hospital and returns to the city and it sounds like there will be some prices that The Penguin and Falcone will be paying upon her return. Very interested to see how this will unfold as the underlying power struggle for these gangster's control of the Gotham underworld was one of the more interesting elements of the first season of Gotham.
The producers have said that the character of Jerome that was introduced as a proto-Joker earlier this season will indeed return for season 2 as well, so we can expect to see some more Jokery transformation for this character as well. So with the Mad Hatter, Mr. Freeze, The Joker, Hugo Strange and Clayface - there are plenty of possibilities for a solid second season of Gotham.
