It's been an open secret for months now, but it's finally official: The Russo Brothers are going to direct what may well prove to be Marvel's biggest and boldest movies to date: Avengers: Infinity War, Parts 1 and 2.
The brothers have long been rumored to have been Marvel's only serious candidates for the role, once Joss Whedon made it clear that he had no interest in returning for a third crack at the franchise - and they have, it seems, finally agreed to a deal. With the pair having already done a sterling job on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it's not entirely surprising that Marvel would seek to snap them up for a further movie - which they already had done, in fact, with the Russos-directed Captain America: Civil War in production now - though it increasingly seems that Marvel's confidence in the pair must be pretty darned substantial.
After all, they're now set to take charge of three huge Marvel movies in the next five years - with all three likely to feature more heroes - and plot threads - than any that have come before. It's a daunting task - but one that Marvel clearly believes the pair are up to.
Their hiring is also, though, something of a confirmation that Captain America: Civil War will indeed have a whole lot of bearing on Avengers: Infinity War - and possibly even that the plot from the former will bleed into the latter. Which...would be pretty fundamentally awesome, if you ask me.
That, though, is a question for another day. You can read the full Russo-related press release from Marvel below - but in the meantime, there's one big question remaining:
Are the Russo Brothers Up to the Challenge?
I'll just leave this here, and walk away loudly going "Ahem" while frantically nodding...
If you still aren't convinced, though - here's Marvel's pitch:
"As anticipation and excitement build to a fever pitch for Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the blockbuster sequel to the third-largest movie of all time, Marvel is proud to announce Joe and Anthony Russo will join the franchise as the directors of Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1” and “Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2.”
The Russo brothers first entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” one of the top-grossing film’s from 2014, and are currently preparing to shoot Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War.” The third film in the Captain America franchise will bring the classic storyline from the comics to life pitting Cap (Chris Evans) against Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), as well as introducing Black Panther to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with actor Chadwick Boseman ahead of his own film later in Phase 3.
Before stepping behind the camera for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War,” the Russo brothers served as Executive Producers and directors for many TV series, including “Community" and “Happy Endings." Joe and Anthony earned a Primetime Emmy award for their work directing the pilot episode of the cult-hit “Arrested Development” series. Their film debut was “Welcome to Collinwood", produced by Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney."
What do you think, though?
