To be honest, I'm pretty surprised by the fact that Naughty Dog has decided to make a fourth instalment in the [Uncharted](movie:583414) franchise with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Of course, the series has been wildly successful for the company, and it's clear to see why. However, Naughty Dog is continually trying to raise the bar in the industry as well as internally. Therefore, another release date for a well established franchise isn't exactly what you'd picture.

Jak and Daxter finished at 3, Crash Bandicoot finished at 3 (not including the racing game), and then the Uncharted games were presumed to be wrapped up at 3. A trilogy is a great way to explore characters, a world and a franchise. After that, things can become a bit stale, and I'm sure that the reason Uncharted 4's release date has been delayed to 2016 is to ensure this doesn't happen.

But now we've been ensured that Nathan Drake will be getting the sendoff that he deserves with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End on PS4. But after that, where shall the company go? Naughty Dog has only ever had two franchises running in tandem in their history, so could the next game that we see be The Last of Us 2? Or the arrival of some new IP?

Will The Last of Us 2 Follow Uncharted 4 A Thief's End?

[The Last of Us](movie:1190382) is of course a remarkable achievement. Naturally, the game was monumentally successful for the company, and Sony have made it clear that it is mot certainly a franchise. But could a small team at Naughty Dog already be prepping us for The Last of Us 2?

There are a lot of directions that The Last of Us 2 could take us, some more exciting than others. However, I also have my reservations about this series becoming tainted. Nathan Drake is a blockbuster hero, this much is clear from the outset. He was created with the intention of him becoming a franchise protagonist. But that's not really the case with Joel and Ellie.

So could we actually see The Last of Us series take a break for a few more years and a brand new setting take the spotlight? While I seriously can't wait for Uncharted 4 , I think I'll be totally done with Nathan Drake after its release date. So personally, I think it'd be great for Naughty Dog to bring out another original game and gift the world another fresh IP.

What do you think Naughty Dog fans? Could the company move straight on to The Last of Us 2 following Uncharted 4's release date? Could we see an old franchise get a new entry? Or is a whole new IP awaiting us? Let us know what you want in the comments!
