I was 9 when I saw the first Sherlock Holmes movie starring Robert Downey Jr and being a child my imagination was wild and extraordinary. When I first watched this film I loved it! This is when I knew I was a fan of Sherlock Holmes and its been like that ever since.
The aspects I liked most in this film were the comedy parts. Sherlock Holmes is a witty character who always finds a funny side of his current situation. However, Sherlock's ally Dr John Watson finds him annoys for most parts of the movie. Whether it be Sherlock getting them in jail for wrecking a boat that was being built or when he offends Watson's new wife Mary by predicting the fate of her earlier marriage only to be wrong. Very wrong. I think that if Robert Downey Jr didn't have any of these jokes and phrases that make you have a little giggle the film may have gone a bit boring and dragged on. Don't get me wrong i Iike action but sometimes we all need to see the funny side of a tense situation.
Speaking of action I'll get on to the parts in this film that I liked due to the fighting. First off was the introduction when Sherlock went through his strategy of how to defeat one of lord Blackwood's henchmen by using the "Holmes Vision". This is one of my favourite bits because it really shows the impacts of his punches on the victims body, it also slows down his technique and also gives you an insight on where he is going to hit that person and why he is going to hit them in that specific spot. You've also got the gun fights and not forgetting the wrestling scene where Holmes first sees that Irene Adler is back. Most of this film is based on the action sequences and there's always one henchmen that keeps coming back for more " Dredger".
Romance also ties into Sherlock Holmes whether it be between the soon to be married Watson and Mary or the on off relationship between Sherlock and Irene Adler. The difference between these relationships is the way they come across. John Watson and Mary Morstons relationship is based on showing affection to each other knowing that they want to be together for a very long time where as Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler's relationship is one that can never be as one is a thief the other a detective, its sort of like if wolverine and mystique became a couple it wouldn't work out very well, however Sherlock and Irene both love each other in their own way they look out for each other and don't want to see the other get hurt. Romance ties in sneakily with this film even though it based more on the action and partly the comedy the romance let's a whole range of audience in. Sherlock Holmes is a "romacdy" film (romantic action comedy film) that supplies entertainment for all viewers yoing and old and it is also a film that never bores you as there is always a plot twist somewhere in the film.
I am giving this film a 9.4 out of 10 purely because they need to get rid of a small selection of the film that doesn't actually tie in with the actual story plot. Other than this Sherlock Holmes is a fun, entertaining film that can match your current movie watching mood. I would definitely recommend this film to everyone who wants to see a new kind of detective work his way through crime in London.
