Gareth Edwards before he became famous for the Godzilla remake (which in turn earned him the opportunity to direct the Star Wars cannon film Rogue One) did a nice little horror/sci-fi meld known as Monsters.
The film was made for less than 500K and Edwards did all the monsters and other effects entirely on his laptop computer. Monsters was a minor hit and tagged Edwards as one of the more talented and brightest of up and coming directors.
Monsters: Dark Continent is the inevitable sequel. Edwards who served as the film's executive producer turned over the directing chores to Tom Green (mini series Blackout and some episodes of Misfits).
In an official statement Tom Green talked about the idea behind Monsters: Dark Continent:
"Dark Continent explores war within the theme of an alien presence on our planet. Watching ‘Monsters’ I immediately identified with the innovation of the filmmaking, the idea of building a world of huge scale reaching beyond the limits of imagination. I wanted Dark Continent to continue to push these boundaries through tenacity, guts and the commitment of cast and crew. Dark Continent provided the freedom to build a unique world and atmosphere in an original way where ambition and limitless imagination way exceeded the limitation of resource.”
The film was delayed due to technical issues with the vast amounts of special-effects required. Monsters: Dark Continent will get a platform release in the U.S. starting April 17th.
