X-Men: Apocalypse is still little over a year til its release date, so you can imagine that director Bryan Singer and his team are hard at work bringing this 2016 blockbuster to life. There are still little details on the film, but far be for it for Singer not to tease fans with minimal reveals. Over the past few months, Bryan Singer has revealed characters such as Nightcrawler and Jubilee joining the Apocalypse cast; as well as teased concepts to the film through artwork. The latest detail on X-Men: Apocalypse gives fans both new artwork to see, and reveals the latest character to the film. In a interview with Empire, Bryan Singer revealed that Angel will be appearing in [X-Men: Apocalypse](movie:1194267), and that Ben Hardy would be playing the character.
Angel is one of the more notable characters in the X-Men series. After Warren Worthington gained angel like wings, he was recruited by Charles Xavier and became one of the first X-Men. Angel made his film debut in X-Men: The Last Stand where he was portrayed by Ben Foster. Now Ben Hardy (who was actually up for the role of Cylcops) will be playing this winged X-Men; but this mutant will not be like his Last Stand counterpart. From the reports of Ben Hardy's casting come this concept art for Apocalypse, and if you are X-Men fan then you may be excited from this reveal.
As this concept art will indicate, Warren Worthington III will not be Angel but in fact Archangel. In the comics, Angel is transformed into Apocalypse's Horsemen of Death and gains blue skin as well as metallic wings; which he can use as a weapon. This news brings several things to light. For starters this reports tell us that the movie will bringing Apocalypse's most notable Horsemen to the silver screen. How Angel's involvement will play in the overall story remains to be seen, but we can be certain that the story of Warren Worthington will have some kind of effect on the movie. The other notable detail about this announcement is that the film could be forming the original X-Men. The new line up of X-Men movies has already established Beast, and Apocalypse will also introduce Cyclops (played by Tye Sheridan) as well as Jean Grey (played by Sophie Turner). The only person missing in this group is Iceman, but he will likely not be a part of this X-Men team and will likely be replaced by Storm (played by Alexandra Shipp). With the involvement of Angel, the formation of the classic team is seeming more and more likely.
While there are many factors to take into consideration, like how Ben Hardy will portray Angel and whether or not Archangel will be blue, the fact that we will be seeing an appearance from this Horsemen is enough for me to get excited for X-Men: Apocalypse. Not only does Warren's presence tease the formation of the X-Men, but seeing this character don his metallic wings allows us to see Angel's most interesting characteristic. Exciting as it may be, we will just have to wait and see what Bryan Singer has in store for Archangel; as well as Apocalypse.
X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27, 2016.
