It's sad to say, but as much as I love Marvel, DC has been living in their shadow for quite some time now. And as many of you know, I have a sort of weakness for those living in the shadows (Loki anyone?). It seems that DC is making a push to pass Marvel with their upcoming films, but so far Marvel is just overall more impressive.
For this argument, let's take The Dark Knight trilogy out of the conversation, since the DC Cinematic Universe features Ben Affleck as Batman rather than the legendary film trio with Christian Bale.
The DCCU really started with Man of Steel, which was cook and all, but it wasn't as ground-breaking as The Avenger, [Captain America: The Winter Soldier](movie:254973), or Guardians of the Galaxy. Now they have the upcoming [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](movie:711870), which is going to pit some of the most iconic superheroes against each other. As cool as that sounds, it has to compete with Captain America: Civil War, which comes out the same year. To be honest, I predict that Civil War is going to blow Dawn of Justice out of the water.
DC is also introducing Wonder Woman, a strong female role model who is one of the most impactful members of the Justice League. Marvel already has Black Widow, who is apparently going to get a lot of focus in Age of Ultron. Not to mention Agent Carter, which gave comic fans an insanely awesome female role model. As popular as Wonder Woman is, she is already entering in the shadow of two popular Marvel characters.
is something completely different that Marvel doesn't yet have an answer for. With all of these superhero movies that are circulating, a villain-driven movie is going to get a lot of publicity.
The cast of the movie already has people squealing with glee. Will Smith as Deadshot? Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn? Jared Leto as the Joker? DC certainly cast some interesting choices, but ones that I think will be wildly successful.
Take Jared Leto for example. The Dark Knight is one of the most popular superhero movies of all time, and it's not because of Batman. It's because of Heath Ledger's portrayal as the Joker. It was nothing short of perfect, and he really made the film what it is. So Needless to say, Jared Leto has some pretty big shoes to fill.
Consider the shoes filled. This image was teased a few days ago as an answer to Jared Leto's absence in the Suicide Squad cast photo. Jared Leto also released this tweet.
Not only did that tweet let people that he is now in character, that one tweet drove fans mad. He is taking his role seriously (which is ironic if you think about it), and I believe that he will be the perfect replacement of Heath Ledger's Joker.
Besides the cast, the plot itself is something to be excited for. According to rumored plot details, the movie will follow closely with New 52 comic stories.
Suicide is really going to be the first of its kind, and I can see it bringing DC up to Marvel's level of popularity.
