The new terms and conditions state that Netflix can ban users if they are using VPNs to evade geo restrictions.
As reported by Forbes , Netflix Inc. has made alteration to its terms and regulations by issuing a warning that the company will dismiss accounts of users if they are find using VPN (Virtual Private Networks) to view the site from the locations where services are not being offered.
CrypticCraig and Reddit in their post mentioned and highlighted the screenshots of Netflix’s new conditions, which consist of severe rules against those who are using VPNs. According to the agreement’s article 6c, “You may view a movie or TV show through the Netflix service primarily within the country in which you have established your account and only in geographic locations where we offer our service and have licensed such movie or TV show.
The agreement on the website stated that the streaming major is going to crack down on users who evade the restriction of locations by the company. Although, it is pretty much clear that streaming company will not have any sort of issue if UK users use VPN to view the Netflix streaming of US. The problem is when a person uses VPN and views their services from another country where the streaming services are unavailable. However, the user is making payments monthly, but Netflix cannot let this go away like this as it doesn’t have permission or license for content streaming in restricted countries.
Reed Hastings, CEO of the company in his interview talks about net neutrality in the world and no geo restriction on content streaming services. Although, Netflix Inc. representatives said that the company is not in the favor of using VPNs.
The main concern is if the company ban users involved in using VPNs, they might lose some customers. Looking at the broader picture, when entire series is being streamed by the users, it means that at least they are not involved in the downloading of pirated material.
The use of VPN is not a big concern for Netflix Inc.; this is mainly because the online movies and TV shows requires a clear cut contract.
