From television, to films, to the music industry, few names in entertainment have taken the world by storm quite like Donald Glover. Or, for some of you, you may know him better by his stage name Childish Gambino.
Since the early 2000s, Glover has been building a small - to start - but loyal fanbase. Although his massive success has been years in the making, it's finally starting to feel like he's about to hit the cusp of some very well-deserved greatness. As a huge fan I may biased, but here are 12 reasons why I think that Donald Glover is a modern Renaissance man:
1. He attended NYU’s Tisch School
Yes, Donald Glover was a student of of New York University's famed Tisch School of the Arts. Glover graduated in 2006 with a degree from the Department of Dramatic Writing. He joined the seriously long list of famous Oscar, Emmy, and Tony award winners.
2. He started from humble Internet beginnings
Like many young artists and entertainers today, Glover got his start on Youtube making sketches in the hilarious NYU comedy group Derrick Comedy.
3. He’s a great writer
Fresh out of college, Glover started his career writing for 30 Rock under Tina Fey at the young age of 23. He stayed on as an executive story editor and writer for 3 years before moving on to start working on Community.
4. He helped write the best Halloween song of all time
In his time at 30 Rock, Glover worked with Tracy Morgan and Jeff Richmond to write the novelty party song "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah." Sure, maybe not everyone will consider this a massive contribution, but it's comedy gold! You can hear Glover's voice in the full song:
Never forget! This song forever changed Halloween and subsequently, my life.
5. He does stellar work on television
Have you heard of the show Community? Well, you're on the Internet so I'm guessing you have. If not, Donald Glover played one of the main characters, Troy Barnes, for 89 episodes between 2009 to 2014.
He's also had roles on shows like [Girls](series:719464), [Adventure Time](series:2327876), and he voiced Miles Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated TV show.
6. And he’s going to start doing even more!
Just because Glover is no longer on Community, fear not! In 2013, Glover signed with FX as a star, writer, and executive producer for the music-themed comedy show Atlanta. The show is set to air this year.
7. He’s moving on to bigger film projects
Earlier this year Glover was in the horror film [The Lazarus Effect](movie:956553), but that's just the beginning! This summer Glover has an untitled role in the Magic Mike sequel [Magic Mike XXL](movie:452782), followed by playing Rich Purnell in Ridley Scott's upcoming film [The Martian](movie:959366) alongside big names such as: Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Kristen Wigg, Sean Bean, and Matt Damon.
8. He does stand-up comedy
There’s no question that Donald Glover is a funny guy. Between his work as a writer and his roles on television, we know that he’s naturally hilarious. But you haven't seen anything until you've seen his stand-up routine Weirdo on Netfllix.
9. He can freestyle like nothing you've ever heard
This doesn't even need an explanation, just listen. There's a reason why it has over 4 million views.
10. He’s not afraid to speak out on political issues
Even though he’s funny, he also speaks out on serious issues. He wrote a poem on his Twitter regarding the tragic events in Ferguson last year.
In a number of tweets, Glover wrote a poem about being a white rapper. The poignant series of tweets included lines such as:
i wanna be so white i can have a number one song with cursing and parents are fine with it
i wanna be so white and so big i get eat dinner with the koch brothers
i hope I’m so big and white i can go to clippers games and it not be a statement
i hope I’m so white they let my friend out of jail sooner
i hope I’m so big and white my cousin wasn’t shot and stabbed twice in the neck twice last month
i wanna be so big. so white
Glover stated the next day that he wasn’t under the influence when writing the poem and unapologetically clarified that it came from a place of honesty and sincerity. I'm always happy to see to see someone famous using their platform to stand up for something they believe in.
11. He’s real A.F.
Donald Glover is one guy who doesn't hold back when it comes to being open about his issues. Back in 2013, Glover posted a series of Instagrams of handwritten notes that outlined a list of his many personal and professional fears.
Too often fans are left idolizing celebrities and thinking that their lives are easy and carefree. While I'm sure Glover's life is full of laughter, it's also kind of comforting to know that he faces the same insecurities that I do. It makes him all the more real and human.
12. He’s a talented musician
Under his stage name Childish Gambino, Glover released his album EP Kauai in 2014. In 2014, his single “Sober” reached 102 on US Billboard Hot 100. If you haven't already, check out his incredible music video that also shows off some of his awesome dance skills below.
He was also nominated for two Grammys in 2015 for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance for "3005" and "Because the Internet."
