Most of us are used to seeing Vin Diesel on screen playing badass action heroes. From the Fast and the Furious franchise to Riddick, he normally portrays the tough guy who generally shouldn't not to be messed with. I mean, have you see that guy's muscles?
But the minute Vin Diesel steps away from the camera, he seems like a far cry from his adrenaline-pumping onscreen persona. From what I can gather, he seems like a total softie.
Since I can't seem to get enough of celebs who are even better people in real life, and in light of the success of his latest film Furious 7, here are nine reasons why Vin Diesel is a totally sweetheart in real life:
1. He's a total geek
I don't know about you, but I was pretty surprised to find out that Vin is a huge fan of the tabletop fantasy role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons! In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Vin came clean about his love of the game saying that he's been playing since he was a kid.
Apparently he's had a few different characters over the years, but he did reveal the name of one. He landed on the name Melkor after perusing the glossary of J.R.R. Tolkien's Similarion. Melkor is the first Dark Lord and master of Sauron.
But that's not all! He is also a fan of the multiplayer online role-playing game, World of Warcraft. Vin states that his love of fantasy and role-playing games is part of the reason why he loves acting so much. It's all about playing pretend and having a good time to him!
2. He fights for what he wants
When Vin Diesel was just starting out, he became interested in screenwriting while he was an English major at Hunter College. In 1995 he wrote a short film titled Multi-Facial, loosely based on his own life as an actor. It was shot in less than three days and cost only $3,000, but it still managed to get accepted to the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.
After the film's release, Vin Diesel wrote a letter to Steven Spielberg telling him how much he loves all of his work, and because Spielberg enjoyed Multi-Facial, he cast Vin Diesel in his first major movie role, rifleman Adrian Caparzo in Saving Private Ryan (1998).
3. He's not afraid to be silly
Sure, he plays a badass in most of his movies, but Vin isn't one to take himself too seriously. We've all seen 2005's The Pacifier, right?
If that's not proof enough, here's a video from Vin's Facebook page where he spends about seven minutes dancing and lip syncing along with Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" and Beyoncé's "Drunk in Love" as a way to thank his fans for all of their support.
He knows what the people want and the man delivers!
4. He would do anything for his fans
Vin Diesel is all about making his fans happy. Not only is he constantly thanking his fans through his various social media accounts, but he's also willing to personally fund films that he believes audiences want to see.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Vin stated that he had to leverage his house and risked it all to help raise money to make the 2013 movie Riddick. His fans reportedly told him:
"We want a rated-R movie and we'd be willing to pay $10 each. Surely you'd have enough to make it then."
That's when Vin realized how much his films meant to people. He then told the Hollywood Reporter at the film's premiere:
"Something about that comment made me think, bless their heart, and if I can do anything with this newfound success, if I could do anything at all, I could deliver on that wish."
Not to mention, there's also this video of Vin Diesel happily running around to sign autographs and talk to his fans. It's so nice seeing a celebrity who seems genuinely glad to talk to everyone!
5. He loves to sing
Not that this makes him any more silly or anything, but it's a well-known fact that Vin Diesel isn't afraid to belt it out when he's feeling emotional. Don't believe me? As just one of many examples, check out this video he posted to his Facebook page on Valentine's Day covering Maroon 5 and Gwen Stefani's song "My Heart is Open."
What a romantic!
6. He seems like a great dad
Vin Diesel is the father of three children with his longtime girlfriend Paloma Jimenez. In multiple interviews, Vin admits that he's a complete sucker for his children and that they "completely and entirely have him under their thumbs."
Just look at the two of them! Even though he's a celebrity he still posts pictures and videos of his best role, "Daddy" to Hania, Vincent, and his newborn baby, Pauline, named after his best friend Paul Walker.
7. He is Groot!
Even though Groot only utters three words throughout all of [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073), Vin Diesel finds a way to convey so much more about the character.
Even though Vin is famous for playing a number of recognizable roles, the one he says he identifies with most is the Flora colossus from Planet X, Groot. In an interview with The Guardian, Vin explains that his ability to maintain his innocence and a positive outlook on life is what makes him and Groot so similar:
"To maintain your innocence is a feat. So much magic comes from it. Ironically, people probably see more of Groot when I'm posting than they would in any of the characters I play."
Plus, how many actors show up for voice recording wearing stilts to get into the character of a giant talking alien tree? Only Vin!
8. He cares about the environment
Not only does he voice one of the most lovable Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, but he takes Groot's life lessons to heart.
After the popularity of the ALS Ice Bucket challenge, which he also participated in, he started the Plant a Tree for Groot movement. He urges his fans to plant trees in honor of the extraterrestrial plant superhero!
9. He's a great friend
More than anything, Vin Diesel seems like a really great friend. The outpouring of affection and emotion he's shown to his friends, family, and coworkers over the years has been nothing short of remarkable.
Especially following the shocking death of his best friend and costar, Paul Walker, he hasn't held back from sharing his love of his brother. He also reminds us all to remember just how precious life is, and that we shouldn't take each other for granted.
