To start off, i'm going to state the obvious. If you have yet to see this show in all of its awesomeness, I suggest you turn back. There will be spoilers. Lots of em. So if you haven't checked out the first episode, keep it moving pal! Wouldn't want to ruin anything for ya.
Let's begin.. HEY I said if you haven't seen the show yet, to keep it moving! Sheesh... okay they're gone. Anyways, the first episode is titled "Into The Ring" where Murdock's vigilante crime fighting and his new law practice find equally dangerous challenges in a murder case tied to a corporate crime syndicate. That was Netflix's description, not mine. It starts off with a man walking intently down New York's streets. You can hear faint sirens in the background, as this mystery man makes his way to and through a crowd. The separation of the crowd reveals a young Matt Murdock lying in the street. The mystery man, now figured out to be Matt's father, rushes to him.
We see a truck tipped over, a damaged car, and a man being helped up who tells Mr. Murdock that his boy pushed him out of the way. That Matty saved his life. Our young hero then begins to reach for his eyes, telling his father that it burns, as we can see this clear liquid covering part of his face. That's when his father looks up in disbelief.
Knowing it was the hazardous materials that caused Matt's pain, his father starts to wipe his face, telling him to close his eyes. Slowly but surely, in that moment, Matt becomes blind. As the young Matt Murdock screams "I can't see!" the show takes us into the future, to a confession booth; where Matt is all grown up. He starts off by talking about his father and his boxing career. How he lost more than he won, before he.... then Matt trails off. So at this point, we can tell that Matt's father has already passed. As he continues to talk about his father and his willingness to fight, he quotes his grandmother who once said "Be careful of the Murdock boys. They got the Devil in em." Matt laughs and explains how you'd see it sometimes. How he saw it in his father when he was in the ring. How he saw his father "Let the Devil out"
Matt goes on to say how he didn't understand it. Not back then. Now this part gave me the chills. Matt says to the priest that he's not looking for repentance for what he's done. He's asking forgiveness for what he is about to do. Ohh snap. The priest then says that that isn't how it works. So he asks Matt what he is about to do... and we all know what he's about to do!!
So after the confession booth scene, we're taken to the docks, where these men are forcing these screaming women into a crate against their will (obviously) One of the men points out how no one can hear them scream. Boy was he wrong!! Murdock hones in on his senses, and takes out these bad guys one by one. Did you guys notice, the guy in the background eating popcorn while his buddies got the beating of a lifetime? Lol i'm sure you all caught that.
Now Matt doesn't take these guys down THAT easily. Remember, he's just starting off, so even he took a few blows. After a wonderfully choreographed fight scene, he frees the women who were in captivity. Then walks over to the first bad guy he attacked, and let's the Devil out. Now right then and there is when i wanted to stand up and clap. A hardcore and gritty fight scene with nasty punches, and cracking limbs.. in the Marvel Universe? Is this a dream? I hope not. Now after that wonderful show of physical prowess, are the opening credits. I jumped up and down on my couch, making noises of excitement, telling myself that that was the best 7 minutes of TV i've ever watched.
After the credits, it's the next morning where we meet Murdock's partner in crime (more like partner in justice) Foggy Nelson. Foggy is a pretty goofy and morally questionable guy. We see him meet up with a police officer who he seems to have grown up with. In this scene, Foggy asks the officer to give him a heads up on any interesting cases.
After this friendly encounter, Foggy meets up with Matt, and a real estate agent to check out a new office. One thing I loved about this scene, was the attention they pay to the "incident" or "death and destruction raining from the sky, nearly wiping Hell's Kitchen off the map" as described by the real estate agent. So yes, it is very very clear that The Man Without Fear exists in the same universe as the Avengers. Yes. I made in my pants as well. Now Matt being the suave gentleman he is, closes the deal, and Nelson & Murdock now have an office. As they're getting comfy in their new firm, Foggy gets a call from the officer he met earlier, speaking of a homicide.
As soon as the police kicked down the door, the woman who we would soon know as Karen Paige, began to confess her innocence. Hey, i believed her. Nelson & Murdock who have been practicing law for about 7 hours, met with their first client (Ms. Paige) at the police station. As they started to question their new client, she started to explain how her and the murder victim went out for a few drinks, and next thing she knows, she's sitting next to his body, covered in his blood. My favorite part about this scene, was when Matt tuned in to the sound of Paige's heartbeat to see wether or not she was telling the truth. After Murdock says that he believes, her we're taken to a nice little park bench where a man is eating his lunch... until approached by some weirdo in a suit.
The man in the suit blurts out a random number. I assumed it was money that the other guy owed, which it was. The older man says to tell Rigaletto he'll get his money. Then the suit said something that got me a bit excited. "Mr. Rigaletto is retired. His books have been acquired by my employer." THE KINGPIN IT"S THE KINGPIN. That was obvious, but it still got me excited. Don't judge me. Now when the older man gets up to leave, the suit says he'd like to show him something. We all knew that couldn't be good. He pulled up a tablet showing the old man a live feed of his daughter. Since the money he owed was a small sum in the Kingpin's eyes, he'd rather him do him a little favor. It was your typical "Do a favor for my boss, or we'll kill your daughter." kind of deal.
So now we figure out that the old man is a prison guard, who works at the same prison that's holding Karen Paige. He creeps into her cell at night and attempts to strangle her with her sheets. When i thought Karen was taking her last breath, she reaches back, and gouges the eye of the prison guard. That causes him to fall back, allowing her to crawl to the bars of her cage, to let out a skin crawling cry for help. The next day, Nelson & Murdock pop up in the police station, more than ready to handle business. They meet with two butt head officers of the law to discuss matters. I love how Murdock handles the situation and says "Get my client released. Don't make me ask again." Oooooo you tell em!! After his show of confidence, one of the butt heads stands up and tells Murdock that if he gets that tone with him again, he's going to kick the sh*t out of him. FAT chance, Mr. Guy! Fat chance.
Foggy says "Really? We're going there?" Haha I like Foggy, funny guy. But you know Murdock, being a man of instinct, starts to put two and two together, concerning the case. Now when they get Karen out of custody, they bring her to their new firm, to get answers. They find out that Karen was getting a little too close to the truth, when questioning her company's pension funds. She knew something was fishy, so she met with Daneil (the murder victim) who worked in her companies legal department. Karen goes on to explain how when she starts to explain to him what she had found, her vision became blurry, like she was drugged. Then all of the sudden woke up covered in his blood.
Now Karen, distressed, and worried about getting anyone else killed, was calmed down by Matt, who offered for her to stay at his place until they got something figured out. In the scene where they get settled into Matt's apartment, Karen asks Matt about his blindness. That's when we see somewhat of a vulnerable side to the Man Without Fear; when he admits that he would give anything to see the sky one more time. Granted we saw his soft side in the beginning when he was tearing up talking about his father, but this seemed different. Matt then wanted to ask Karen some questions. Why didn't they kill her the first time? Then try and kill her the second? When he came to a conclusion, he asked if she kept the Union Allied Pension file. Once again tuning into her heartbeat, Murdock knew she was lying when she said that her boss took the file from her.
In the next scene, we meet even more bad guys who are most likely going to get their a**es kicked by none other than Daredevil. To be honest, i thought were going to see Mr. .... wait, we're not supposed to say his name. But i thought we were going to see... that guy in this scene. Instead, we met up once again with the weirdo in the suit, who asks these Ukrainian gentlemen why they were short on their cargo totals. That's when they explained the encounter with "The man in black" who beat their four men.
Back to Murdock's apartment! Where Naive Nelly (Karen) sneaks out, to grab the file from her apartment, believing that Mr. we can't say his name didn't have people watching the place. Well despite what she believed, he did. But luckily, our friend in black came to save the day. Boy, let me tell me. I am madly in love with their fight scenes. It was beautifully choreographed to show off Daredevil's physical prowess, and amazing instincts. This next part got me in my feels. When they went out the window, and Murdock face down in the rain, had a flashback to a moment with his father where he said "C'mon Matty... Get to work." Then Matty gets up, and gets. To. Work. His fighting style is so finesse, so.. awesome. For a second, I thought he was going to choke that man to death with the chain! But man, did that henchman give our hero a run for his money.
After knocking the enemy unconscious, Murdock gets on his feet, and takes the file back. He's met by Karen, who is lost for words. When Murdock tells her he'll get it in the right hands, she tells him that she can't bring it to the police, that he can't trust anyone. He then says, that they'll just tell everyone. So he dumps his body (alive, of course) on the stairs of the bulletin with an envelope labeled "Editor" on his chest. Then in the next scene, we hear.. ah screw it we hear the Kingpins voice over the phone while speaking to the weirdo in the suit. Now that the Kingpin knows of Nelson & Murdock and believes they can be of use, we know that not just Daredevil, but Matt Murdock will be meeting with the Kingpin sometime soon. Now, we're taken to N&M's firm, where Karen cooks up a meal meant for her first husband, for our favorite attorneys. They speak of the man in black, while Murdock subtly changes the subject. As the camera pans back, and shows their homemade sign, it reminded me of an ending to some sitcom. But i loved it.
This next scene shows Murdock training in the same gym his father did. I only assume, because of the small poster that's shown in this frame. It's like the writers are telling us that Matt is getting to work, just like his father told him to.
In the last few minutes, we're shown a montage of criminals preparing to take over the city, as well as a montage of The Man Without Fear preparing to stop them. The final scene, is Daredevil watching over his city ( like Batman (; ) tuning in to the noises of the night, when he hears the young boy we saw captured during the montage, cry for help. The man in black pulls down his mask, and prepares for action.
