Last Summer Sailor Moon Crystal premiered, allowing fans to catch a new episode every first and third Saturday of the month retelling the story of Sailor Moon which follows the Manga source much more closely. In January this year the 26 episode anime hit the end of the first story arc of the Sailor Moon Manga at episode 13. This instantly mad fans excited as the first 26 episodes would cover 2 of the 5 story arcs of the Sailor Moon story. This meant we would meet Chibi-Usa whom is destined to become Sailor Chibi Moon and Sailor Pluto. However everyone wondered if we would see the other 3 arcs of the Manga also converted into the new anime. Well good news for Moonie fans as today Toei Animation Europe revealed that the second series is currently in production and is set to start airing this summer! While we do not have an official date, it is likely that the second series will follow directly on when the first series ends (a trend in Japanese TV franchises e.g. 1990's Sailor Moon, Super Sentai, Precure and Kamen Rider to name a few).
While many have panned the new Sailor Moon Crystal saying it does not compare to the original 1990's series, I would have to disagree as unlike the 1990's series it contains 0 filler episodes. This makes the story fast paced and every episodes builds onto the story. So what will we see in series 2? In the second half of the first series of Sailor Moon Crystal we met Sailor Pluto, well in series 2 we should meet her fellow Outer Senshi, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune.
What is exciting about this pair is the fact of how driven they are on their own mission, and how they to start with have no interest in working with Sailor Moon and the Inner Senshi. Also it will be interesting to see how the new series Sailor Moon Crystal will handle the love story of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. To some this may seem like a bit of a surprise and it will be if you have only ever seen the English dubbed 1990's Sailor Moon. That is because in the English dub the pair were rewritten to be cousins instead of lovers. The other character that will most like play a massive role will be a big fan favorite. Sailor Saturn.
Sailor Saturn was a massive driving force behind the third series of the 1990's series story line and is the youngest member of the Inner and Outer Senshi. What makes fans love her so much is what it means if she uses her powers. For Sailor Saturn she is the harbinger of death and using her powers will kill her in the process as it acts as a double-edged sword. It is also said in the original series that Sailor Saturn will only awaken when the world is about to end, so with that in mind the series is likely to have a slightly darker tone than the first series. It will be fun to see how her tragic story is played out for a second time but this time in the style of Sailor Moon Crystal.
Are you excited to get more Sailor Moon Crystal? Which of the 3 remaining Senshi are you most excited to see debut in the show?
