Production on next summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse begins soon and director Bryan Singer is slowly lifting the veil of secrecy on the highly anticipated sequel. With next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past follow-up, Apocalypse, set to follow the plot of one of the comic book series’ most popular storylines, there’s some elements of the film we already know about and of course there’s lots of speculation. We know the film will take place in the early 1980’s and focus primarily on the First Class cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult and will also introduce younger versions of original X-Men like Sophie Turner as “Jean Grey”, Tye Sheridan as “Cyclops”, Alexandra Shipp as “Storm” and Kodi Smit-McPhee as “Nightcrawler”. It was also revealed earlier that EastEnders star Ben Hardy had landed a role in the film, but who exactly he would be playing remained a mystery. It was long rumored that he would be playing fan favorite “Angel” in the film and that rumor seemed more likely when director Bryan Singer released concept art confirming that “Angel” would play a role in the film.
Well, thanks to Singer, we can now officially confirm that Hardy will in fact play “Angel” in the movie. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Singer said quote,
"Ben Hardy is Angel - I shall confirm it for you! But he's not a very nice Angel! And that's all I'll say..."
Singer’s comments as well as new concept art released seems to confirm speculation that we will see Angel transformed into one of Apocalypse’s 4 Horsemen, known as “Archangel”. In the comics, the ancient mutant Apocalypse, played by Oscar Isaac in the film, genetically alters various mutants to serve as his Four Horsemen. After Angel’s wings are amputated, Apocalypse agrees to replace them in exchange for him becoming the Horseman Death. Angel agrees and is transformed into “Archangel” with his new wings being organic metal which can cut through almost anything and fire metal, knife-like feathers. Though Singer wouldn’t confirm Angle’s transformation into “Archangel”, the concept art does seem to suggest that is what will happen in the film. Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Angel on the big screen. He was originally played by Ben Foster in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. Considering the timeline of the new film though, it is unlikely Hardy will be playing the same character as he would have been just a toddler in 1983. We’ll have to wait and see how and if they’ll address this, but they’ll likely somehow contribute it to the new timeline that was formed at the end of Days of Future Past. We’ll all see for ourselves how it all plays out when X-Men: Apocalypse arrives in theaters on May 27th, 2016, but who’s excited to see Ben Hardy play “Angel” in X-Men: Apocalypse and do you think Singer’s statement and the concept art confirms he’ll become “Archangel”?
