Today I watched the original Punisher film from 1989 which has had two reboots (or one reboot which had a sequel) The Punisher (2004) and Punisher: War Zone (2008), which was actually my first review. The Punisher stars Dolph Lundgren as the star role of Frank Castle an ex-cop who hunts down the mafia because they killed his family, and then circumstances change after five years when the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) arrive into town.

There are a few positives to this film, which include: there are cool explosions, good action, the story progression is good and I like the acting in the film. To expand, as it is an 80's action film it has a lot of good action and explosions which I enjoyed; also all the performances I thought were good, I liked Dolph Lundgren as The Punisher but not as much as Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson. One of my favourite characters in the film was Castle's ex-partner played by Louis Gossett Jr., he was just great in the film; there was only one performance I didn't love which was Shake (the guy Frank gets his information off of), I thought his performance was slightly overacted (it wasn't a bad performance hence why it isn't in the negatives).

There are a couple negatives, which are that the story is quite basic and the special effects aren't great; as it is an 80's action film I expected the story to be as it was, quite basic so I am ok with the story and it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the film. Also in places like when stuff is thrown it doesn't look very good but I can't judge a film on the special effects when in that time the technology wasn't developed enough to have the great CGI we have today.

Overall I really enjoyed this film for what it was but I don't think it is as good as Punisher: War Zone, so for the reasons I have mentioned I rate this film:
