This past Friday, April 10th, I was provided with an opportunity, by our very own MoviePilot, to attend the annual Orlando MegaCon (which happens to be my first time ever attending a convention, ever). There was so much to do, and so much to see! There was plenty of great food, plenty of interesting panels, lots of really awesome merchandise to buy and lots of prizes to be won!

What I found myself really drawn to, however, was not so much the activities and whatnot, as the attendees themselves. Lots of folks came in plain clothes, but there was about an equal number of folks who came dressed as some of their (and my) favorite characters, from TV, movies, novels, comics, anime, manga, games and more. All across the genre-fandom spectrum, it was a sight to behold.

I have never done cosplay myself, so I just had to snag as many pictures of really great cosplayers as possible. Some were so clever, or so elaborately done, that I just couldn't pass them up. So here's my dedication to them. But I couldn't HOPE to choose an absolute favorite from among them, so this series will not be posted in ranking form, but alphabetical order. You be the judge of which is best!

With that being said, let's begin!

AKASHA (Queen of the Damned)

Bow down before the queen!
Bow down before the queen!

This cosplay, I really loved, because first off, it was totally on point. The girl portraying the Vampire Queen actually does resemble the character, and the costume matches to a T. Not to mention, bonus points for the fact that she was willing to wear this skimpy number to a con full of awkward geek/nerd boys.

ALADDIN

Rockin the Street Rat look!
Rockin the Street Rat look!

I like how simple this cosplay looks. It's not shabby at all, despite consisting of no more than a purple vest, a red belt, and a patched-up pair of loose-fitting pants. And yet, I find this guy very believable as the character (skin tone, hair texture and all). Not to mention, he struck the stereotypical deadbeat/broke-guy pose, which was coincidentally the result of him really not knowing what pose to do. Hilarious.

BISHOP (X-Men)

Lucas Bishop, of the X-Force!
Lucas Bishop, of the X-Force!

Above all, props to any adult who still holds a great passion for the characters they knew and loved as kids. On top of that, it's not just some generic character who everybody dresses up as, ie Batman or Superman. He, as a Black man, wanted to cosplay a Black male character, so, whether you recognize Bishop or not, he loves the character, and wanted to represent. Huge props to him.

BOMBASTIC BAG MAN (Marvel Comics)

Your friendly neighborhood, um...Bag Man?
Your friendly neighborhood, um...Bag Man?

I have to say, this was one of my favorite male cosplayers that I saw on all three days. I know that it's no rare sight to see Spider-Man at any con you go to. Spidey is a staple character like Batman or Superman. Anybody can be a fan of 'normal' Spider-Man, though. It takes a TRUE fan to remember that one time Spidey's outfit got messed up, and he had to borrow one from the Fantastic Four.

CHESHIRE CAT (Alice in Wonderland)

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves...
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves...

Do I even need to explain why this is one of my favorites? Okay, well, first off, the Cheshire Cat is one of my favorite fictional characters. He's whimsical, eccentric and very clever. Second of all, this version of the Cheshire Cat is my favorite incarnation. And most importantly, this girl is in a full body fur suit ensemble, and it is hot as crap outside. That is what I call some good ol' fashion dedication. WIN.

GROOT (Guardians of the Galaxy)

Again, the reason behind my love for this cosplay should go without saying. I normally try to avoid chasing after commonly cosplayed characters, because they're sometimes overdone, like fads. But this right here? This girl carried that bucket around with her all day, and anytime you asked for a pic, she would stop to do her li'l dance. Spot on cosplay, ridiculously adorable, and yes, DEDICATION!

I am Groot. You are Groot. We are Groot.

ICON (DC Comics)

His name does not lie!
His name does not lie!

Icon is a character unknown to all but the most devoted fans. So, I have to say, even at a con where all the nerds and geeks and fans get together to celebrate their favorite characters, this REALLY caught me off guard. But here he is, showing love for a really great (yet unfortunately underappreciated) character. Props to the character for being awesome, and to this guy for recognizing it.

IRON MAN

Mr. Stark??? Is that you???
Mr. Stark??? Is that you???

Again, I normally don't pay attention to when folks do characters that are 'in', because you see so many. And yet, despite how many Iron Man cosplay I saw out at MegaCon, NONE were as impressive as this. I knocked on the armor to see if I could get a picture, and I promise, he didn't feel a thing. That being said, he was definitely one of my favorites, out of all the cosplays I saw out there.

KORRA (The Legend of Korra)

I'm the Avatar, and you gotta deal with it!
I'm the Avatar, and you gotta deal with it!

I saw a few Korras out at MegaCon; different outfits from different phases of her character's development. Yet, of all the Korras, I imagined this cosplayer as actually having a chance at portraying her in a fan-film or even a right and proper movie, so for that, she was definitely my favorite of the different Korras, and definitely one of my favorite cosplayers out at MegaCon, in total.

SQUIRREL GIRL (Marvel Comics)

Doreen Green, the Squirrely Queen!
Doreen Green, the Squirrely Queen!

I cannot say it enough. I really love Squirrel Girl. I know she's meant to be a jokey character, something like comic relief, but I find the character very endearing. She's just so much fun to see in action, and this cosplayer captured the spirit of that character to a T. She was draped Head to (Tippy) Toe just like the Squirrely Queen herself, and as you can see here, so nice and all smiles. Perfect!

So, of my ten, do you have a favorite? Do you have a certain order you would rank my favorites, from 1 (least favorite) to 10 (most favorite)? Or did you see a cosplay out at MegaCon, that you think are better than the ones I chose? Let us know in the poll and the comments below!

(And don't forget, this is just the first in a series. Next I'll be covering my favorite cosplay DUOS from MegaCon! Stay Tuned!)
