One of the most appealing aspects of Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, is how they offer the opportunity for normally non-FPS gamers, to broaden their horizons. They do so by featuring the system of VATS; a system which incorporates the turn-based gameplay mechanics present in the earlier instalments of the Fallout franchise, and introduces them to the world of real-time combat. It's a seriously clever device and it could be considered one of the defining aspects of the series.
However, with the industry evolving so rapidly, you wonder whether this system is still a priority of Bethesda's for Fallout 4's release date. I have encountered some players who claimed to have never really used the VATS system in the Fallout games, which I find pretty extraordinary. The game is so much more difficult without using this mechanic, and personally I find that the combat is seriously lacking without it.
Bethesda aren't known for great combat. Let's face it, the combat system in Skyrim is pretty clunky, aside from the shouts, and Fallout 3 has its issues too. However, at least in Fallout the issues can be totally bypassed by engaging with VATS. But if Bethesda were attempting to fix their combat issues and replace the system of VATS with something else on Fallout 4's release date, how would you feel about this?
New Gameplay Feature to Replace VATS in Fallout 4?
If it were any other developer in the world, you might be seriously worried about the removal of VATS in Fallout 4. It's not exactly a system that publishers like, seeing as combat is actually stopped so that you can pick the point you want to shoot at. It's potentially a feature that prevents a lot of gamers from trying out the Fallout games and the potential Fallout 4.
But could we actually see Bethesda offer a form of compromise? Could we see combat change in that VATS only gives us a slowed-down perspective on battle situations? I'm not saying it would be like Max Payne 3, but if it the gameplay feature was to slowly be removed, slowing down the action with VATS seems like the most logical way to go about it.
So the question is whether Bethesda still want to keep VATS the way they are presented in Fallout 3. It's a completely unique gameplay feature, but just like we saw with Shouts in Skyrim, maybe we'll see a new system come in or see VATS drastically altered in some way.
So what do you think gamers? Would you like to see a slowed down version of VATS? Do you think Bethesda could remove the feature on Fallout 4's release date and replace it with something else? Let us know in the comments!
