We all know Kevin Spacey as a ridiculously talented actor, complete with many major award nominations and an extensive film and TV resume to boot. We have seen this man transform before our very eyes on screen, in such films as The Usual Suspects to American Beauty, and let's not forget his brilliance in House of Cards, the Netflix original series that nearly everyone I know is obsessed with.

What many people don't know is that Spacey grew up in an incredibly difficult household, complete with an American-Nazi father who was also physically and sexually abusive.

Being Raised by "The Creature"

Spacey's father, Thomas Geoffrey Fowler, was a supposed failed writer, was as Nazi-extremist as you can get, and sought to look like his idol, Adolf Hitler. He collected Nazi memorabilia and claimed that the Holocaust never happened.

Spacey's brother, Randall Fowler, who is a Rodney Stewart impersonator in Boise, Idaho, has spoken out about his father, according to FOX News. Fowler claims their father sexually abused him and another female relative, while leaving Spacey alone.

Spacey Distanced Himself to Help Move On

This trauma, however, still affected him, and he kicked his father out of his life for obvious reasons. He also changed his last name to Spacey, his mother's maiden name, as a means to distance himself from his horrific father even more.

Kevin Spacey is an extremely private man, who has managed to use these painful experiences as a means to help create deeply interesting and dynamic characters. In most of his interviews he averts questions relating to his private life, hoping to help perpetuate the belief of his characters instead of allowing his celebrity to shadow his phenomenal performances.

"If you're lucky enough to do well, it's your responsibility to send the elevator back down."

A Phenomenal Philanthropist

You can tell Spacey is a kind man with the intent to help just by the quote above alone. He supports so many charities, including Cancer for College, Elton John AIDS Foundation, and UNICEF, just to name a few.

Spacey has also co-hosted the Unite for the Future Gala, benefitting the victims of 9/11 and Doctors Without Borders with Dame Judi Dench in the past.

Kevin Spacey may have grown up in a difficult home, but he didn't remain in that headspace. He created a better life for himself as well as for others, showing that it doesn't matter where you come from but where you are going.
