With the new trailer out for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice I got to thinking about how DC is trying to build their universe. This is their first cross over film, and a it has a lot to prove. Now if you didn’t know who Superman was, and watched this you couldn’t be faulted for thinking he was the villain. He’s too powerful, he’s caused a lot of destruction, people hate him, and now Batman is going to kick his ass. If you do those things chances are you’re a super villain. Now obviously we’re suppose to know that he ISN’T a bad guy, but looking back on Man of Steel… He is a bad guy.
In Man of Steel the first thing we see is the Kryptonian government failing to do something about the impending ecological disaster that will doom their planet. Jor-El places the Codex (the genetic source of all Kryptonian birth in their society) in his naturally birthed son. Then he shoots the kid into space to go to earth. Zod kills Jor-El, but kinda has the right. Jor-El just rocketed the entire reproductive system for their species into space. From Zod’s perspective Jor-El is trying to doom the race. We know he isn’t, but nevermind that for now. Years later on Earth Kal-El has grown into a “kinda hot” man named Clark, and knows nothing about his people. Zod caught up to him, and tells him he needs the codex to rebirth the Kryptonian race on a terraformed earth. Superman decides to start fighting and destroy a large number of cities, and kill thousands of people in the process including Zod. Now I’m not critiquing the violent chaos or use of murder on Superman’s part (I do, but not what this is about) I’m critiquing Superman for being a big dumb asshole.
He finds out within him lies the key to the survival of his highly intelligent race, and decides not to help. I’m not saying he necessarily had to help Zod wipe out humans, but he did not do the heroic thing. The heroic thing would be to negotiate with Zod about terraforming LITERALLY ANY OTHER PLANET IN THE DAMN SOLAR SYSTEM!
Just “I’ll help you since the survival of my race is obviously important, but we’ll have to compromise on you using Earth as it isn’t really necessary” Zod just want Kryptonians to live on. He’d probably agree. Give him Pluto. It’s a planet. Or isn’t. Or is again? Point is no one is using it. If Kryptonians can terraform planets then they just need the codex to repopulate. Superman either kills or banishes to purgatory the rest of his race. He makes no attempt to do the right thing. He could easily be the bridge to working things out. Be an ambassador, but no. He decides to kill a bunch of people rather than think about things for a minute.
You could argue “Oh but under Zod the Kryptonians would have been a communist people with the government deciding their roles in society”. So? Does that mean let them all die out? Should we just murder everyone in all of the communist nations on Earth right now? Pretty sure communism is better than extinction. If it really bothers you get things up and running, and in a few generations talk about political reform. That’s where ambassador Superman could do more good stuff. Hell if anything communism would make building a new society more efficient in those early years.
My point is Superman has proven he is not a hero. Even outside of the Zod just wants his people to live on even if it means going to a foreign land, wiping out the indigenous people, and taking their land for their own. That's as American as it gets. Add to the fact that the reason they're in trouble is because they ignored the ecologically conscious scientist, and he might as well be Uncle Sam. Clearly Zod isn't the best person, but he's more of a hero than Superman. Superman is just a dark depressing selfish murderous dick. Even Batman isn't that bad. People are right to want him to leave. He’s dumb, and too powerful to be so ignorant. I hope Batman kills him, that would truly be the dawn of justice. But it is obvious they're gonna become BFFs by the end of the movie (cause DC wishes it made the Avengers so bad right now).
So what do you think of this major plot hole/character flaw? Does this lessen the film in your eyes? I mean outside of the undeserved ill fitting tone, dumb dialogue, many other plot holes, and rushed attempt at world building. To be fair I thought the music was good, having Lois know his identity was less insulting to her character, and I LOVED the line "Welcome to the Planet, Mr. Kent." That kills me everytime. They should have cut it down to just that. That'd be a great movie. Anyways for a better live action DC universe with actual heroic heroes you can always watch the CW shows. They're great.
