With the all the interest and fans around the new Marvel series such as
and Luke Cage , I now feel these have totally changed how Marvel heroes can not be portrayed , not just on the big screen but the small screen too. The series I think needs to be made is about a duo of a male and female named Cloak & Dagger.
Origins of the duo:
Cloak is the male half of this duo and was named Tyrone Johnson, an Afro - American teenager who suffered from a severe stutter, one so severe that it tragically prevented Tyrone from saving his good friend from being mistakenly shot as a thief from a policeman. Tyrone filled with guilt from this , ran away from home.
Dagger is the female half of this duo and was named Tandy Bowen, a Caucasian teenager who felt neglected and unloved from her rich mother and like Tyrone , ran away from home.
The two run away twins met in New York City at a bus terminal. They were both offered a place to live by an unscrupulous chemist named Simon Marshall. Marshall was developing a highly addictive drug for MAGGIA. Marshall began testing this drug on runaway teenagers like Tyrone and Tandy.
After Marshall tested the drug on multiple runaway teens including Tandy and Tyrone , it killed the other teen runaways but strangely activated the duos latent mutant powers.
Tyrone became to resemble a shadow and so wrapped himself in fabric , his powers included his cloak could open a portal into the dark force dimension and can then project foes into this dimension and can teleport himself and others.
Tandy was able to project daggers made of light ,which are manifestations of the life energy that resides within all living beings. Dagger generates more of this life energy than normal humans do, and uses it to feed Cloaks hunger for such light. Tandy can also cleanse people of drugs and poisons.
Together these two became Cloak and Dagger, and decided to use their newly found powers to save children and teenagers from drug dealers and other criminals and became became the notorious vigilante duo who had run in with many other heroes such as Spider-Man .
Cloak & Daggers first ever appearance in the comics was in the Spectacular Spider Man #64 which came out in March 1982. They went on to appear in many Marvel Stories and remained as secondary characters in most. They debut their own comic on October 1983 and received positive reviews.
Taking them onto the small screen:
As I mentioned earlier of how popular the new Marvel t.v. show shows are and how they bring another take on the Marvel on screen universe , I believe added Cloak & Dagger to the universe with their own series would be very beneficial and tell a whole other side of the universe everyone already knows and loves.
Daredevil really gave me a great insight and proved how Marvel can take a beloved character and make him into a total kickass and retold his tales with a gritty and dark feel them to , which was amazing because we do not get this with other characters in the shows or movies. I understand the upcoming The Avengers: Age of Ultron is trying to take this universe into a darker tone but compared to Daredevil it is mild, I mean Daredevil has such a cool , gritty feel and watching it , I know anything could happen and keeps things intense.
Cloak & Dagger would be perfect for a dark toned series and would be something never seen before. The series could show both characters origins and how they met, following on to how they left home met the unscrupulous chemist Simon Marshall , who triggered their mutant powers and caused them to become Cloak & Dagger.
Both characters could have great character development as the series progresses and show each characters personality and traits. Cloak will be seen as deep and mysterious whereas Dagger will show to be the beam of light and be very set minded on her goals.
The show could focus mainly on the duos mission of saving children and teenagers from drug dealers and cleaning up the city streets, this may just sound like an anti drug promo for teenagers but really it could be made into something epic. The theme of the series could be kept grim and dark and make death from drugs an everyday thing for people , hence why the duo try so hard to save young teenagers from drugs. Drug dealers could be portrayed as ruthless murderers in the series and have Hench men and hit men to carry out their dirty work as they deal their harmful drugs, while Cloak & Dagger hunt them down.
The chemistry between the two will be strong as both of them see each other as someone they looked to when they had no one else. Apart they work less effectively and grow weak but together they can be a powerful force to have to deal with. Although both contrast each other in terms of Dagger being the beam of light and Cloak being a shadow , they still are very close , so much so that Cloak is beyond protective of her and deep down loves her but not that she is aware of this , just concentrates on her mission of stopping drug lords thrive in her city.
Cloak to enemies will have to portrayed as the most fearsome of the duo as he is a shadow and brings fear and confusion to people he encounters , whereas Dagger although viscous in combat is shown as a bright light and sometimes something of beauty. As a duo though Cloak & Dagger bring fear to their enemies regardless.
Everything Marvel needs a villain, whether this villain is powerful and brutal or just full of whits and able to prepare devious plans. In this series the antagonist is does not possess super powers nor does he aim for world destruction or anything crazy like that , despite this he is still gruesome and strikes fear into those who are unlucky enough to cross him.
Who could this be ? well its the notorious drug dealer who goes by the name The Candyman. He may not actually possess any mutant powers but he is ruthless individual and a major threat to the public with his knowledge of drugs. He could be the main antagonist in the series and make a world of trouble for Cloak & Dagger , leaving them to constantly keep up with his devious schemes. He can be a murderous drug lord who sees the duo as a threat to his drug business so hires multiple hit men and assassins to take them out , but with each hit man or assassin the duo defeat they get one step closer to The Candyman , it would be a malicious game of cat and mouse and could make out for a intriguing story for a series.
So the duo clearly are well worthy of getting their fame. They are not a well known duo but I believe if they got the chance they could become classics in the Marvel Universe. I don't believe a film would work as they are not known enough and their story would take time to develop and whereas this is limited in a movie it would be very possible in a series of their own. They would bring so much to a series and have interesting backgrounds and adventures to follow.
Changing The Name:
Okay this is the final thing , the name Cloak & Dagger may create fuss to name the show as the name has been used in other medias e.g. The Film Cloak and Dagger 1946 which was directed by Fritz Lang or the T.V. Show under the same name which came out back in 1984 and followed the story of a young boy who loses himself in video games.
In order to prevent confusion or anything like that I feel a new name could be given to this Marvel duo if it made a series , one which would be relevant and sum them up equally. Perhaps even , give it a title with the sub title of Cloak & Dagger after it e.g. The Runaway Mutants: Cloak & Dagger, its just a thought and perhaps it is best to keep its original name , regardless I believe the show will bring Marvel fans together and let them enjoy a series of heroes they may have not experienced before, and let the duo of Cloak & Dagger get some mainstream recognition.
