If you're anything like me, you've seen ALL the Avengers Age of Ultron trailers about a billion times by now. I'm always noticing something different in them, but still excited to see the movie! Upon seeing a still from the trailer, I saw something...interesting.
Well, we all know that HYDRA was secretly infiltrating SHIELD for the past 70 years, fomenting distrust, stealing secrets and killing key people. Based on everything we've seen from some [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035) spoilers (including the junior novelization) we know that HYDRA has been using Chitauri technology to make earthly weapons more lethal and to give them a leg-up on the competition.
Did you see this in one of the Avengers trailer?
Those appear to be HYDRA operatives firing guns that look like they're using Tesseract technology. Where would they get such a thing? Marvel had this idea way back when they made the first Avengers movie and Item 47, the One-Shot that came with the blu-ray!
Item 47 was about two people, Benny and Claire, who find a Chitauri weapon that SHIELD didn't get when the Battle of New York was all over. They use it to rob banks. They get pursued by Agent Sitwell, who we know is a traitorous HYDRA agent, and Benny, Claire, and the weapon are taken into SHIELD custody.
At the end of the short, Benny is taken to SHIELD Research and Development to help make prototypes based on Chitauri weaponry. The filmmakers then show various blueprints on how those prototype SHIELD/Chitauri weapons are going:
Look familiar? You can see the artwork in the background, and it sure looks like the weapons HYDRA is firing at the Avengers in the trailer.
A neat little Marvel Easter Egg for you, people. Marvel has this continuity stuff down...
