Even if her film is not slated to arrive until 2018, it is safe to say her film is one of the most anticipated in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it will be the first feature film to focus on a female superhero. But you may wonder why is she so anticipated by comic book fans? Let me explain why.
Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel
Prior to her becoming a superhero she was a Major in the Air Force. Now for anyone who knows military rank, you will have already realized this means one thing! She outranks the first Avenger Captain America. With Steve only being a Captain, Major Danvers is his superior officer. So if the pair were sent on a military mission he would have to follow her orders.
Once she gained her powers through an alien explosion her DNA was changed making her half human and half Kree. The Kree have now been established in the Cinematic Universe which will help in bringing her origins onto the big screen. However one of her greatest adversaries has already been defeated! In [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073) we saw the team face off against Ronan the Accuser and it was a fight for their lives and the lives of the entire planet Nova. For Carol Danvers in the comics, facing Ronan means it is simply Tuesday and she faced him solo on more than one occasion.
Her actual powers are also pretty interesting. In addition to being able to fly and being super strong, she has energy based powers that have multiple function. Below is a video of some of her abilities as shown in the series Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
The best part about this combination means, Carol has never been the damsel in distress needing rescue. She can even hold her own in a fight against character like Thor and the Hulk.
In her time in the comic books she has been a solo hero, member of the Avengers, leader of the Avengers, a close ally to the X-Men and is currently a Guardian of the Galaxy. So Marvel have plenty of option of what they could do with her after her movie and before, excluding the X-Men option.
There are three major possibilities for who she may face off against in her movie now that Ronan is no more. The first up is the beautiful but deadly Moonstone.
In the last 10 years Moonstone has gone through several outfit changes and the majority cause her to be a darker version of Carol. If they choose this route they could rewrite her history having her and Carol as old acquaintances and Karla gets envious of always being second to Carol. This would then enable them to have Karla find the moonstone and become a nemesis for Carol to face in the movie. However this would lead them down a Reed Richards/Doctor Doom relationship and would negate the fact that Karla is actually a very twisted woman inside. In the comics she was a psychologist and would actually hypnotize her patients into committing suicide. Something that has always reminded me of Batman's Harley Quinn. With the power of the moonstones Karla gains flight, superhuman strength, photokenisis and intangibility. These abilities would make her a brilliant foe for [Captain Marvel](movie:949779) to face in 2018.
The next potential villain is Nitro.
Nitro is a man who was the subject of experiments at the hands of the Kree Empire. He was basically turned into a walking bomb that is ready to explode if provoked. With this in mind, he would be a prime antagonist in the Captain Marvel movie as Carol would see what she could have been as a result of the explosion. Likewise Nitro could resent her for her using her powers for good and not being the monster he is. The interesting part about Nitro is in the comics he was the reason for the Super Human Registration that led to Civil War. A superhero reality show featured a group of heroes chasing down villains for people's entertainment. However they bit off more than they could chew with Nitro, as he detonated and destroyed a school full of children and the surrounding neighborhood live on TV.
So with that in mind, Nitro could appear in [Captain America: Civil War](movie:994409) as the reason behind the government deciding to enact the Super Human Registration Act. But if he does not, it could mean we may see him in 2018.
The final possible choice is...Thanos himself!
With her movie set between Avengers: Infinity War part 1 and 2, could we see her and Black Panther get a hold of 1 or 2 of the infinity gems to try and postpone his plans? Given her ability to absorb energies, she could be one of the few to be able to safely hold an infinity gem and she would have the muscle and speed required to obtain one from him. Another possibility is at the end of Avengers: Infinity War part 1, Thanos could "appear" to destroy the Avengers. With them out of the way he could simply be looking for anyone who would stand a chance of beating him either alone or with others. Carol has been the leader of the Avengers so she would be the perfect choice to select a new team of heroes and lead them into battle in Avengers: Infinity War part 2 before being rejoined by the original Avengers.
Needless to say, with Captain Marvel being a power house in the comics, her villain will have to be equally as powerful which does not leave a large number to choose from.
Like with many Marvel movies we could also expect to see one or two supporting heroes to aid our heroine through her movie. Here are some of the choices. First up is Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel.
Considering the age of some comic book character, Kamala Khan the new Ms. Marvel is still a baby by comparison. However she is one of the most critically acclaimed superheroes of the 21st century. She is the first Pakistani super heroine to have her own focus series and she is also half Inhuman. Marvel would be nuts to ignore her and with Reed Richards off limits to Marvel her elongation powers could fill in that gap in the super power spectrum. Also considering the Inhuman will end Phase 3, she would be a perfect contender to cross from Captain Marvel into Inhumans.
Next is the chance for some romance on the side, Wonder Man.
Wonder Man was originally engaged to Scarlet Witch in the comics before ending up in a coma. His brainwaves were transferred into The Vision which caused Scarlet Witch to fall in love with him. When Wonder Man awoke from his coma he was quickly dumped by Scarlet Witch (bet he wishes he stayed asleep). Given The Vision will see a new origin story in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wonder Man could be given an entirely new story himself. In the comics he has team up with Carol more than once and the pair have shared the odd kiss from time to time. He is basically living iconic energy with super human strength, flight, healing and many other super human attributes. He could easily join Captain Marvel in her movie while not being more powerful than she is.
Next is Carol's old comic book side-kick Anya Corazon.
Spider-Girl first entered the comics as a new hero that Carol took under her wing to train. Anya looks up to Carol as a mentor and as a superhero. Originally she had an exoskeleton that covered her body, but this was ripped from her body causing her great pain and injury. She later gain powers similar to Spider-Man and adopted the identity Spider-Girl. What would be brilliant is if they did something similar in the Cinematic Universe and we saw Anya have her exoskeleton ripped away from her by the movies antagonist. This way they could show Carol with a sense of defeat as her young ward is critically injured while in her care.
The final option is....Spider-Man
With there being so much talk about Spider-Man entering the Cinematic Universe it is a possibility he could enter Captain Marvel's movie. The pair have teamed up on numerous occasion and Carol has even admitted to having feeling for him. With her more serious nature and his wise cracking personality, the pair could become an iconic duo on the big screen if given the chance.
What Can We Expect?
It is safe to say we can expect anything, but one thing is certain. Captain Marvel will be a power hitting movie to rival the Thor films. With her great power and strength Marvel can not afford to play it safe and her comic book fan base will be expecting the same. She will also have to compete with the Wonder Woman film which will be released before her movie, which means critics will hold the two film next to each other and compare the two. If Marvel are smart they will already be talking with Joss Wheddon to direct the movie as he has a history of portraying strong female characters well, and they will be ready with a note book and pen to note down everywhere they think Wonder Woman's film fails.
