It's been a couple months since Marvel and Sony worked together to sack Mark Webb and (unfortunately) Andrew Garfield to reboot Spider-Man yet again so he can play a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then, everyone has gone bat-sh*t crazy over who will play Spider-Man, what he'll do in the Civil War, if he'll show up earlier and whether he will be black or white. Through all of this "Spider-Mania," people have overlooked many of the other characters that could also play a role in the MCU that were/are owned by Sony. These are characters that may or may not appear, but could certainly have a great impact if they are added to the universe.

1. J. Jonah Jameson

J Jonah Jameson as played by JK Simmons.
J Jonah Jameson as played by JK Simmons.

What he could do:

Obviously Jameson would be the editor of the Daily Bugle, supposedly one of New York's biggest papers. He has a very strong opinion on nearly every superhero, not just Spider-Man. In fact, during the Civil War story arc, Jameson plays many large roles. He takes a side in the War (pro-registration) and dedicates the paper to supporting the pro-registration side throughout the war. In addition, he's a common "go-to" for the comics if they need an opinion on an event, especially on News Channels. He won't be the biggest character throughout the series, but he can certainly reoccur and be a common antagonist / comic relief for many different characters and events.

When he could appear:

As previously stated, he could certainly play a large part in Captain America: Civil War since he chooses a side in the war. He could also appear in one of the upcoming Netflix series to have his usual opinion on the menaces taking the streets.

Who could play him:

JK Simmons - Simmons would be the ideal choice to return since his performance from 10 years ago still seems irreplaceable. Unfortunately, after winning an Oscar, I doubt he would be willing to play a role he has already done three times.

Stan Lee - Stan Lee always dreamed of playing J. Jonah Jameson in one of the movies. With a couple acting lessons, Stan The Man could certainly portray the role. However, like last time, Stan Lee would agree it's not the best idea for him to play Jameson due to his old age. This certainly has not changed over the last 15 years.

Nick Offerman - Please don't kill me for this one. Offerman could potentially play a great Jameson. First off, he has the 'stache. Secondly, he has the low, growl-y voice. Put a little gray in his hair and seriously make him mad, and you've got yourself a new and original J Jonah Jameson.

Why he may not be able to work:

As seen in Daredevil, New York already has a major newspaper: The New York Bulletin. However, (SPOILERS) the Bulletin begins to crumble towards the end of the first season after the FBI found one of its writers working for Fisk. It wasn't the chief editor, but it was enough to shed a bad light on the paper. It could give the Bugle the chance to rise.

2. Aleksei Sytsevich / The Rhino

What he could do:

Rhino plays a much larger role in the Marvel Comics than just a Spider-Man villain. That's why I was confused that he was owned by Sony. One of the most exciting things Rhino could do in the MCU would be to duel it out with the Hulk...a lot. Due to the fact that Marvel is trying to avoid dealing anymore with the supporting cast of The Incredible Hulk, Red Hulk and Abomination are ruled out. And after Age of Ultron, Hulkbuster is already used. That does not leave any big baddies that Hulk can duel it out with in a huge epic battle, unless Rhino is rebooted. In the comics, these two fight all of the time (at least when Banner is on Earth). I'm not saying he could be a central villain, but I would love to see a movie open with Hulk hunting down Rhino through some city streets. In addition, he is Russian. He could easily tie into Black Widow's storyline.

When he could appear:

This one's a 'toughy' since he doesn't play much of a role in the Civil War. I would love to see Aleksei Sytsevich start out in one of the shows, like Agents of SHIELD or Iron Fist. From there, he could be made into a recurring character throughout the series, possibly playing a part in [The Avengers: Infinity War](movie:738027) as one of the villains siding with Thanos. He could also appear in a Hulk movie if they ever make another one in Phase 4.

Who Could Play Him:

Jason Statham - Statham is already a beefed-up actor, so giving him an enormous rock suit leaving only his head to be visible won't be too unbelievable. In addition, Statham's experience in other serious action movies like the Fast and Furious Franchise would give him previous experience in a role like this.

Vladimir Mashkov - Who is Vladimir Mashkov you ask? Why, he's an actor from Russia who is also beefed up, has played in many action films (like Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) and certainly looks like a fuse is about to pop in his head, much like the trigger used for Rhino.

Why he may not be able to work:

It's too soon. With the cancellation of the [The Amazing Spider-Man](movie:45497) franchise still being fairly recent with the Rhino fight right at the end of the final one, starting Rhino right back up through Spider-Man may be a bad idea. If given more time and introduced the proper way, Rhino could certainly play a fitting role in the MCU. It would also be difficult to put Rhino in a Hulk movie since Hulk is still owned partially by Universal Studios.

3. Norman Osborn / Green Goblin / Iron Patriot

What he could do:

Let's face it, Norman was going to mentioned here at some point. Oscorp, Norman's company, is one of the most powerful companies in Marvel and is also a very large tower that can be seen from most other buildings in New York City. Norman Osborn is often known for his large amount of pride and his urge to protect his name. This was displayed when he formed the Dark Avengers, donning the suit Iron Patriot, to start a new team publicly as Norman Osborn, not as the Goblin. At one point, Norman even leads the Dark Avengers into a Siege on Asgard to try to take control of the realms. If added to the MCU, Norman Osborn would be able to change a lot, even for his competitor Tony Stark.

When he could appear:

Oscorp Tower could be added into the background as soon as Ant Man to give clues that Norman Osborn does certainly exist in this world. After that, Norman's debut should be left to the first or second Spider-Man films. From there, Norman could appear in the Infinity Wars to follow Thanos or even help the Avengers to fight Thanos to help protect his name. If there's still more time for Norman, Phase 4 could certainly use a little Osborn.

Who could play him:

Chris Cooper - After only appearing as Norman Osborn for about 3 minutes during [The Amazing Spider-Man 2](movie:508593), Chris Cooper could easily reprise his role to redeem himself. Cooper is an amazing actor and was certainly hired for a reason. It's a pity that we did not get to see more of him.

Matthew Morrison - Best know for playing Will Schuester on Glee and for having a strong Broadway career, I'm sure Morrison is just dying for the chance to show his darker side as an actor before he is ultimately marked as a happy-go-lucky singing teacher for his roles. Morrison has the perfect size for the business man Norman Osborn and could easily turn into the frightening nemesis of Spider-Man and business rival of Tony Stark.

Why he may not be able to work:

A third re-casting of Norman Osborn might seem a little much for many fans since he would be one of the few characters in all three reboots. In addition, Iron Patriot has already been used in the MCU as War Machine's "upgrade" in Iron Man 3. Besides that, I don't see why Norman Osborn shouldn't be able to show up in the Marvel movies.

4. Flash Thompson / Agent Venom

Agent Venom
Agent Venom

What he could do:

Besides be awesome, Agent Venom could play a large role in the events of the MCU. With the Venom / Carnage movie not being technically cancelled just yet, it looks like the Venom symbiote will be playing some role in the upcoming Spider-Man movies. Agent Venom could bring out the villian-turned-hero or anti-hero aspects to the MCU that have not shown very much yet. For those who don't know, Flash Thompson, the bully at Peter Parker's school, eventually joins the Army in the Iraq War but loses his ability to walk. The venom symbiote eventually finds him and latches onto him, enabling to walk as long as he wrecks havoc as the previous Venom's had done. However, with the help of the Thunderbolts, Flash manages to fight back against the symbiote and use the Venom suit for good as Agent Venom. This story arc could help a lot during the Infinity Wars and could also be a new plot for the Spider-Man films that carries out into other films in the Universe.

When he could appear:

He could debut during one of the Spider-Man films or during the potential Venom movie. From there, Agent Venom could show up in [Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.](series:722469) or Avengers: Infinity War as a part of the new team of Avengers.

Who could play him:

Dave Franco - Though he is short, "Baby Franco" could actually make a good Flash Thompson. Franco showed in Now You See Me that he is certainly up for some action roles with the potential of being a heartthrob if given enough attention. He also showed in 21 Jump Street that he can be both a bully and a determined character with a job to do.

Rupert Grint - Yes, Ron Weasley from Harry Potter. Grint unfortunately has not been able to do much since the end of the Harry Potter franchise and this could be his big break. Many people will just say 'no' immediately due to his red hair, but if he cuts it and dyes it Rupert could make a great Flash Thompson. He is already bulky and could really prove to be a great bully who turns into a black-suited spider agent.

Why he may not be able to work:

I honestly see no reason why Agent Venom would not be able to work. The only reason I can possibly think of is that he would be in CGI the entire time he is Venom, but if there's one studio with enough time and money to make a character Venom full time, it's Marvel.

Anyone else?

There are hundreds of Spider-Man characters that interact with characters besides Peter Parker. These were only four big ones. So what do you think? Can these characters actually play a role in the MCU or am I just crazy? Is there a better actor you can think of? Is there another character out there that can impact the MCU more than one of mine? Swing 'em at me in the comments.
