The Fallout franchise has undergone quite a transformation since it moved into Bethesda's hands. Fallout 3 and Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas are indicative of the transformation from a tactical RPG, to a more traditional FPS-RPG format. Naturally, the original format of Fallout and Fallout 2, is less likely to garner the following that the later additions in the franchise have. But that's not to say that they should be overlooked.
The original Fallout games are loved for a reason. They still have tremendous stories, engaging gameplay and a sense of immersion that few other titles can claim to have. Obviously, Fallout 4 is not going to return to the roots of the series and be released as a tactical RPG in the way that these other games were on its release date. The series has gained far too many followers in its new format to go backwards. But would gamers like to see a tie-in or spinoff Fallout game get a release date alongside Bethesda's Fallout 4?
A Tactical Fallout RPG & Bethesda's Fallout 4
The old Fallout games are still marvellous to this day, and though they may seem like a challenge for a modern gamer to go back and try, their stories are completely worth the effort. But I wonder whether Bethesda would be willing to invest in such a product. It was fantastic to see Obsidian Entertainment create Pillars of Eternity in the style of Baldur's Gate, and the game did incredibly well.
Therefore, I'd love to see Bethesda give a tactical RPG Fallout title a try as well as giving Fallout 4 a release date. But there's obviously no way that the two will be the same package, and naturally I don't want Fallout 4 to go back to its roots. I want to see how they can expand upon the formula they've given us with Fallout 3. But that doesn't eliminate the space for a great tactical RPG inside the Fallout universe once more! Am I alone in my desire for this kind of Fallout spinoff game?
What about you gamers? Have fans of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas actually made the trip back and tried the original two games after enjoying the work of Bethesda and Obsidian? Or have you been a fan of the Falloue games for all of these years? Do you share my desire to see a tactical RPG Fallout game get a release date? I personally feel like it has a lot of potential for success!
Fallout 4 will hopefully be getting some word on its release date at this year's E3, and of course that should take all of Bethesda's prioritised time. However, I'd love to know whether people still have a desire to see another tactical RPG in the Fallout universe! let us know in the comments!
