Most people don't know who the actor in that horror makeup is, or the creature that is running after our hero in some show or movie. Many of us know about the hugely talented actor Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the fantastic blockbuster hit's Lord of the Rings trilogy. There is another actor I have been following. One that isn't quite as well known, but is a kind and very generous soul, Doug Jones.

Doug Jones.
Doug Jones.

Were you to be shopping for dinner at the supermarket, get in line, and stand behind Doug, you would likely not even think he was in some of the more popular movies of our time. He has played in some varied and interesting rolls. Doug has acted in more than twenty five different films and TV shows. He tends to be the man under that fantastic mask!

Doug is best known for his roll as 'Abe Sapien' in the movie Hellboy. But did you know he was also Pan, in Pan's Labyrinth? Yes indeed! That was Doug under all those prosthetics. From what I know of Doug, he is a kind and generous man, has a good relationship with his wife, and travels quite a bit to shows and conventions to meet his fans. He is not afraid to try new things, and makes sure his fans know how he is doing.

I'll take a passage from IMDb that are his words:

"For the last 20 years of my life, I've been wearing something unrecognizable. I've been acting for 20 years now and I've been under the radar. I was completely under the radar until Hellboy came along. And I did notable roles before, Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus which became like a Halloween classic over here on the Disney Channel, and I had smaller parts in lots of films like Batman Returns, Mystery Men, Adaptation, Three Kings, and they were even things with my own face in them. But I was basically actor of the day and I didn't get much recognition, and guest-starring on TV shows that come and go and commercials that come and go. But Hellboy was the one that had real staying power, in terms of its notoriety and the size of the role I had. I guess I became a speck on the radar then, but now it's Pan's Labyrinth and Silver Surfer. Finishing Fantastic Four and Pan's Labyrinth coming out with these Golden Globes and Oscar nominations has been a press frenzy for me. I've never been thrust in the public eye this much with me, Doug Jones, as name recognition which is happening now, which is new for me. It's very exciting but still it's nice to go to 7-11 and still be me. Nobody has to know, right?" (Chavez, 2015)

Doug Jones, the man inside the mask. The physical genius that made Norrin Radd (The Silver Surfer) look and behave like what was inside a comic. Bringing life to a two dimensional character. The same can be said with his portrayal of 'Abe' in Hellboy. Doug brought a gentle vulnerability to Abe, helping us believe that there actually could be someone out there like him.

I'll be talking about Doug for a while. So keep in touch!
