During 2015 CinemaCon, Sony Pictures executive Tom Rothman announced that an animated Spider-Man film will be released in 2018. The film will be brought to the big screen by masterminds Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the duo who brought The Lego Movie to life.

The animated film will exist independently of the live-action films. In other words, it will have no connection to the adventures of The Spectacular Spider-Man, which will debut in Captain America: Civil War.

It is unknown if the same actor that will portray Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the live-action films will be the same actor to voice Spider-Man in the animated films or if animated Spider-man veteran Drake Bell will take on the role.

Correction: An earlier report stated that the animated film will co-exist with the live-action films.
