A Point of Geeks report

So this is guaranteed to be the wildest news that you will hear all day. In recent years, actor, director, and mogul Tyler Perry has looked to stretch himself as an actor beyond the roles that he has created for himself in his "Madea cinematic universe." The results have been extremely mixed. His turn as former FBI agent Alex Cross was not widely accepted by audiences in 2012. However, two years later his supporting role in David Fincher's Gone Girl almost stole the movie, with his character often outshining Ben Affleck and bringing needed levity to the thriller. It looks as if Perry is not finished stretching his perceived limitations and has joined a superhero franchise most never would have imagined.

Perry is joining the sequel to last year's reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is already in production. According to a report from Variety, Perry has signed on for the role of Baxter Stockman. Stockman is a integral piece of the TMNT mythology, who made his debut in the pages of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. He is a genius scientist who is known for creating the mechanical menaces known as Mousers. Originally the robots were designed to kill rats in the New York sewer system. Until Shredder teamed up with Stockman and had him redesign his inventions so that they would hunt the turtles surrogate father, Splinter. Stockman in many iterations goes on to become a mutated housefly as well. It is unclear how far the characterization will go in the sequel, but the fact that Perry signed on to the role signals that it must be a fun character.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is being directed by David Green (Earth to Echo) and again being produced by Michael Bay. The cast includes the returning Megan Fox and Will Arnett, who will now be joined by Stephen Amell (Arrow) as Casey Jones and Perry. It is unclear how all the pieces will fit together, however it seems that they are going all in on creating an even more outrageous film than before. As long as the actual Turtles aren't lost in the mix and get more of an opportunity to carry the movie than last time, it should be fun and bizarre ride.

Baxter Stockman isn't the only character making his live-action debut in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. This past week at the Cinema Con convention in Las Vegas, long-time fan favorites Rocksteady and Bebop were recently confirmed by the producers to be joining the sequel as well. The mutant rhino and warthog were created in the early 90's specifically for the cartoon. They became huge fan favorites and have popped up in many different mediums over the past 25 years, however they have never been realized in live-action. Judging by the leaked concept art that Paramount has since tried to take off of the internet, the designs were faithful to the original incarnation and signal that this sequel will be the biggest Ninja Turtles adventure yet.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is scheduled to hit theaters June 3, 2016.

What do you think of the casting of Tyler Perry as Baxter Stockman? How do you see him working into the plot? Are you excited about Rocksteady and Bebop? Let us know!
